  1. Yeah this is a sad day for Caps fans. One of my favorite recent memories for Backy was in the the 2021-22 season and he got to celebrate his 1,000th point. Loved that for him! I grew up watching him tear it up with Ovi. So definitely a sad day overall.

  2. Definitely sad..was hoping for a recovery for sure. Praying he’ll be able to get to 100% so he can be healthy throughout his retirement. What a great player! What a great person, and teammate. He gave us years and years of hockey excellence…

  3. Certainly sounds like a retirement. Hopefully that hip resurfacing helps him have a good quality of life. We know it hasn't worked out for any NHL players yet though. That's secondary though for him

  4. Probably hurts Backstrom every time he gets bumped. Too bad. One of the best ever at passing the puck.

  5. It's hard to watch a player I've always loved step back. Especially now that it's been two in the same 6 months. (Hagelin and now Backstrom) But i think this was a decision made by Backy to not hold the Caps back and allow them to surge forward. At the end of the day Nicky is a Hall of Fame caliber player and he will always be in caps fans hearts

  6. He was and will be one of the best players in the NHL not just today but all time. He will be missed more than any other playmaker to ever play the game for the Washington Capitals. A true HOF in the future and he will be missed is so many ways. You can't replace a Nickolas Backstrom, It will take a long time to find another center that is and was as productive as Nick …but life goes on and so does hockey. We will all be praying for you Nick and know that Hockey is not a forever thing and that your healing, happiness and family is what's most important in life and thru God all things are possible. God bless you my friend and you will be missed. 😇😇😇😇

  7. It is time for Backstrom to retire and not come back in February and help destroy another season for the caps. 15 years is what he got. Thanks for the good years. Now leave!

  8. A quiet legend whose words were spoken in acquiring 271 goals, 762 assists, and a major contributor in hoisting the Stanley Cup for this organization. Not too long from now his number "19" will be suspended in the rafters of Capital One Arena and he will be a member of the HHOF. Backstrom's contribution to the team for the last 17 seasons has been enormous. All Caps fans are grateful and thankful for his work, accomplishments, and memories he brought us. Wish him and his family the best in the future.

  9. When the news popped up on my phone, my first thought was how ironic it was you talked about this in this morning’s podcast. I’m sure Nick needed to give it a try after having a full summer to train. Should he decided to retire it will be a sad day but I also believe he is an unselfish man & will do what is best for him & his team. Even if that means walking away from the game he loves.

  10. What does stepping away mean? Still getting that big money that’s such BS JUST retire if you can’t play..

  11. Do what you need to do and good luck Nick!! All Caps fans know of your great contributions to this franchise!!
