  1. I think the Flyers have one of the best scouting (I almost typed "scouching", lol) systems in the league. Also as Myers and Zamula cases show, it's not over even after the draft, so let's see who they bring over to the training camp.

  2. Great video! I agree that Philly had a great draft, particularly their trade-up for Brink. Even with below-average skating, he put up some gaudy numbers in the USHL and stood out at U18s. He should be excellent value at where he was picked.

  3. This draft relies on the skating ability of Bobby Brink. Hate to be so simplistic, especially after watching this very good breakdown. But he skates as if it’s his first time on the ice. Really, too, Braun will determine a whole lot of it. They could’ve had two second-round picks, if they traded back (with York, who I do like very much as a Top 10 player). But the fact of the matter is, Caufield was still on the board.

He put up record numbers, is a plus (or at least above-average) skater and a sniper, plus being a pure RW. All of which the Flyers have sorely lacked for over a decade, now — great as Konecny is and will become. Had they kept 41 (overcompensated Braun trade), 46 and, one of their Top7-10 prospects (Lacynski, O’Brien or even Rubtsov) plus a 2020 second-rounder, I really wonder/believe they could’ve gotten back into the mid-late teens to try and get York too. I thought of him as the second-best defenseman in the Draft, but that was obviously not the consensus among the league.

Having said all that, if Brink can learn to skate and push-off properly, they’ll have gotten a steal. If he remains the same, I’m not sure he ever gets past the AHL level. York is a great luck moving, zone entry, two-way defenseman, no doubt. But it’s not like he’s Quinn Hughes. The opportunity cost of leaving Caufield on the board could prove very costly. Then again, if Hextall would’ve just chosen DeBrincat, who played very much like Caufield without Jack Hughes, the issue would be moot. Yes, Laberge has a great CHL Prospects Game — I’ll never understand passing DeBrincat up in the SECOND-round. If they thought he was too much of a risk in a very mediocre-at-best mid-first round, whatever. To pass him up in that second—round was downright criminal. Then again, he pretty much redeemed himself with the Hart selection. Loved the Allison pick too. Shame he can’t be 100% healthy.

Back to 2019 — York, without the Caufield Cost, plus a mid-second rounder at 14 is an A grade. Brink, I lean more towards C than A, but at least they took a chance on what many believed to be a first-round talent — his hands and playmaking certainly are first-round caliber. Hopefully youth can be on his side. Regarding Attard, despite being overaged, 30 goals as a defenseman is quite a feat. Would give them a B on that. The rest of the draft was at least a solid B grade, as well. Especially grabbing Brodzinski and the (Y)Egor skater.

I really think they could’ve done better for a litany of reasons. But just looking at the picks by themselves, it should turn out to be a solid draft class. It must’ve been via Hextall’s formal scouts, as Fletcher is a disaster drafting and the Bryan Colangelo of the NHL — as we’ve seen already in one offseason. I really hope all their prospects’ hockey sense is as valuable as commentators make it out to be, since they desperately need Farabee or Frost to step up on the third-line. I’d have preferred to stay away from Nisky and/or Braun and purposed Haglin for that third-line, but it is what it is. With all their size, I would’ve loved a true burner skater. We have to rely on their size, savvy and strength to be a contender this and the following years. Hopefully York can become a very good #3 or solid #2 on a good Flyers team. (Glad I kept the comment concise, ha.) Great video, Senor Scoucher!

  4. Brink will be fine does anyone remember a 3rd round pick names Brayden Point, he couldn’t skate for the life of him when he was drafted. I’ll leave it at that

  5. I was surprised brink was still available when Philly got him. I think Philly was surprised too and that's why they traded up. I like the way Hextall built the Flyers. They are poised.

  6. I remember hearing people complain and speculate about another flyer's draft pick's size, skating and strength despite tearing up the minors in goals scoring. I hope that Brink makes the team while that old rookie, the G-Man, is still playing.
