  1. The amount of times Hagel puts himself into this position is absolutely ridiculous. Learn how to play in the corners, dude. This wasn't intentional and frankly isn't even a penalty.

  2. A whole lot of acting by Hagel. He skated into cici's should with his head down. Hagel should have been called for the unsportsmanship

  3. I sure wish I was half as tough as all the muscle bound superheroes in the comments section who can take a shoulder to the head from an NHL defenseman and not even flinch. I'd call out Hagel for embellishing too if only I were so tough and manly as these guys definitely are in real life.

  4. As a former ref I like the calls, I think the refs here were thinking that it was a legal check, but they need to make some calls here, so nothing gets out of hand. Sometimes officials do that, so things don't go south quickly. At the end of the day our job is player safety #1, and to make it a fair game #2, and that's what they did here.

  5. That play was definitely an accident and the refs are just trying to keep the peace with the calls. The thing that is more crazy to me, is how both McDavid and Stamkos are covering their mouths while talking by the penalty box. The fact they are doing that, I'm guessing, to make sure nothing gets embellished, is kind of sad.

  6. 1:02 look at the shoulder movement he knew what he was doing, the refs called it because they didnt want the game to spiral with the golden boy playing.

  7. Everyone here ridiculing the referees. Real time, this definitely looks like a penalty. Although this can be argued it’s not a penalty, picking the head is an indicator. It’s easy to say for every couch referee that it’s not a penalty looking at it in slow motion motion from 29 different angles.
As a referee it’s probably better to be wrong and protect the players rather than missing a head shot.

I cannot stand when people try and criticize officiating. They get one look in real time with no replays. Do they get things wrong? 100% but they don’t get the luxury of looking at replays in slow motion. No one says anything about the calls they get right….but are quick to jump on the ones they get wrong….
If you have never refereed you would have no idea…..

  8. That’s just unfortunate for both players. Unbiased between both teams, and between both players. Just a play where two players are doing what they’re being paid to do. Nothing malicious about it, just a fast game played on ice. Refs see a guy go down holding their head so a pen is called. Can’t really argue with that, it’s a fast game.

  9. I think Ceci will just get a fine from the DoPS. If he does end up being suspended, I'm guessing it will only be one game.

  10. Lol the same night trouba blows a guys head up who is puck watching with full intent to hit the head they post it as a huge hit and then call this incidental contact with zero intent a check to the head? nhl officiating is a joke

  11. i dont really know if i agree with the illegal check to the head call. the definition requires the contact to have been avoidable. Ceci really cant avoid it because he has no exact positioning on hagel until they collide (since hes trying to make a play on the puck). I guess you call it to avoid bullshit later, but man is it a weak call to begin with

  12. Tampa fan here, I think the refs got this right. It looks like an accident, but like every other penalty (tripping, high sticking, etc), intentions don't matter. He hit someone in the head so he should be penalized.
