Trade Marner For what? Expiring UFAs…hardly. Are the Leafs trading a pic and a 2nd tier prospect to Calgary for a 3rd pairing D in Zadorov is the question. Also, when you are looking to upgrade your D you don't trade your Selke finalist best defensive forward. Jeeze…figure it out!
Flames would only do that if Mitch agrees to an extension at $12M per for 5-8 years. Otherwise no deal and Leafs remain in cap hell.

Nylander took a huge discount on his first contract. No one followed his lead. It's Marner's turn to take the pay cut. If he's not willing, then ship him out. He'll be worth a decent return. Also expect Tavares to take one based on age. Leafs winning a cup depends on these guys deciding whether they want to win a cup or just make money.
They are already up against the cap, knowing full well that Marner will not take a pay cut and Nylander will definitely get a raise next year, the cap goes up only 4 mill next year (guess what, Matthews' new contract kicks in!). If you're looking to build a strong team and get good players on the backend and a really good goalie and good depth players, its just very difficult to make the money cap situation work. Something will most likely have to give. On a side note, I would really like it if they all stayed but for the right price IMO.
