The New York Islanders Earned an Important Win Over the Flyers By Correcting Some Recurring Mistakes

The New York Islanders played a better game against the Philadelphia Flyers and held on for a 3-2 win. In addition to beating a division opponent, we discuss many of the things the Isles did better last night that were major problems during their seven-game losing streak. That includes strong goaltending by Ilya Sorokin, two goals by Brock Nelson and another goal and better game from Anders Lee.

Plus we have our hero and goat of the game and we discuss some things Islanders fans have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Better showing, cant fault Sorokin on either goals. Still a mess in our zone when the opponents press, hopefully something that can be addressed. Over all, a refreshing step in the right direction.

  2. ….Pretty win…..I like that fact that the islanders were sticking up for themselves when they got pushed around….finally….💫🏒

  3. Glad to see a much more focused and consistent effort from the guys . Matt really had an off night, but Anders Lee was much more noticeable. Happy Thanksgiving Gil and everyone in Islanders nation.

  4. Typical isle win. Nothing impressive about it. And no blown lead this game. Still outshot. Only one line does most of scoring again. 29 saves isles this game. Plus sorokin sharp. And lee goals are too far and too few in between. 21 has fallen off a cliff. Nowhere near ppg now. 21-29-18, 15 goals. 13-14-10, 13 goals. 27-44-26, 4 goals. 15-53-17, 6 goals. Is that good balance or sorry balance? That is some paltry balance from a four lines must score team. D men have 7 goals, five from 8. Yet strangely isles have not been shut out yet this season. One article today ranked eight 'underperforming' teams and how panicked they should be heading into thankgiving. Had isles ranked sixth. Said isles are in a weird spot with too many long term vets that .500 is not good enough right now. Seriously? Isles underachieving? Isles are right where they should be looking up at playoffs and just aren't a good team. Another more accurate eastern conf. rankings had isles 12th. Said adding a scorer a must and would help teams playoff chances. Only a christmas miracle makes that one happen. And isles have 30 and 29 to be thankful for this game. Would really be thankful if ownership saw the light or a scorer suddenly appeared on isle roster. Good show. Happy turkey day gil.

  5. Good morning Gil, I agree with everything you are saying 🎉i think the islanders play alot better in their division. Sorokin was good and I was at the game 😊 I thought maybe today you would be off. Enjoy your turkey dinner with your family ❤ go islanders 🎉

  6. A solid win over a hot team on a 5 game win streak. The Flyers beat some very good teams during that streak before the Isles ended it. The biggest difference I noticed is the Isles came out and played a more defensive game in the 3rd rather than pressing to build the lead. I haven't seen the stats, but it seemed like they gave up fewer 3rd period chances this game. But there were times guys were heading out of the D-zone BEFORE we had possession. That's a bad habit Lane needs to snuff out fast. The next 5 games will be interesting. It looks like the Isles have 3 tune-up games before playing a couple of contenders in Carolina and FLA.
I'll say it again. Barzal doesn't handle getting hit hard very well. It still throws him off his game.

  7. Good morning team. A very Happy Thanksgiving to everyone out there. Yes, it was a much needed win. I enjoyed the game very much. Seemed to me like they were playing with purpose. Possibly a few moments of sloppy play in our own zone. I'm not looking for perfect games. Just games where we play well enough to give a good shot for the win. Gil, and the rest of my teammates, I truly hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. If you're traveling anywhere, near or far, please be careful and be safe. Until tomorrow.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  8. The isles were still completely back on their heels for the last seven minutes of that game, but overall much better performance😅 agreed. Great podcast again Gil! Let’s see the Isles build on the momentum. LGIs!

  9. Happy Thanksgiving Gil 🦃 I fell asleep watching this last night. I just sent you a post on X. I don’t think the type of defensive structure we play is sustainable? By the time we get control of the puck in our zone. We don’t have anything left in the tank to go on the offensive. I’m never seen or played in a defensive structure like that… well, that’s a lie! I started a roller hockey team. I was the Captain and I knew about 1/2 of the guys never played organized hockey before and it took 5-6 weeks before we stopped puck chasing in our zone and started playing positional hockey. I was playing defense & the wingers got tired of me yelling at them: “Why are you so low?! Go cover your point!” The first 5-6 weeks we were getting blown out & we couldn’t get the puck out of our zone because we were puck chasing and our points were wide open and the opposing team just kept cycled the puck in our zone.

  10. I’m going to start rewatch the game. I have to try & figure out what we’re doing in our D-zone.

  11. Happy Thanksgiving to you, yours Gil and all our fellow Islander fans!! A win,
is a win, is a win. Pedestrian like but but beat a Flyer team that has surprised!! Take care Gil!! Enjoy the Holiday boys!!

  12. I’m thankful for on this Thanksgiving day. 1, We still have our team on Long Island. 2, I’m thankful we have a brand new building built to watch hockey. 3, I’m thankful that we have really good owners.

  13. Even with 2 wins in a row, I still see a team that needs some turnover on the roster, coaching and gm….old and lack of creativity on offense are glaring problems
