I think allowing Rathbone a more guaranteed roster spot is huge. He's looked great so far when he's played in the NHL, and last season he was literally one of the best dmen in the entire AHL (at only 23). I think the talent distribution helps a ton and we have to remember that last year under Bruce, despite how awful on paper our d core is, the Canucks were like nearing top 3 league wide in 5 on 5 goals against (our penalty kill was just absolutely abysmal last year too)
I think if Hughes wants to try out the right side, he would have the skill set to do a good job (I think someone mentioned Bobby Orr is a left-handed shot playing RHD as well). The more concerning thing for me: if Hughes is moved to the right, then you are expecting his defensive pairing, together with Hughes, to eat up MAJOR minutes. But really, no one can. OEL is declining, and I don't think Rathbone is rather to play 25 to 30 minutes a night. With Hughes on the left, he and OEL split the majority of the defensive minutes, and both play less which gives the mediocre RHDs on our team less time to expose their weaknesses. In short, I don't necessarily think moving Hughes to the right would solve the problem – we still need more talent on D.
