The Best Hunting Knives | Our Editors Favorite

A hunting knife has a single purpose: processing meat after a kill.

Of course, it should have secondary characteristics that make it useful for survival, as a camp knife, and for all-around utility. But the big job, the one it must conquer, is getting meat field dressed quickly so it is preserved and will taste great on your dinner plate.

What to look for? The knife should hold an edge or be easily field sharpened. It should fit well in the hand to protect the user from accidental injury, and a good hunting knife is usually stout enough to crack bone.

It doesn’t need to be big or bulky like some sort of weapon. Remember, the animal is already dead when the knife comes into play.

  1. Please keep in mind that this knife is made buy Buck specifically for Cabela's and the steel is cryogenically tempered which dramatically improves the steels over all properties , which make it a premium knife for the money. Please go ahead and try to find a better knife for the money if you can. Cabela's has a great knife for the money and it's a keeper.

  2. I live and hunt in Alaska. I like the Cutco drop point with double-D edge…excellent for really tough moose and bear hides!

  3. Nice review!!! I don’t care for the “stats” of the knife review. Tell me about the sharpness retention, does it do what it is supposed to do, and the price range! You nailed it!

  4. The Cabelas Alaskan Guide Series is crazily underrated. The 110 Alaskan Guide is a bargain. The only two that don't really work as well are the fillet knife and the Vantage. The fillet knife's handle is small and slick, which is disconcerting while filleting fish. The Vantage is a flipper with a small piece of steel to actuate with and the coating interferes with smooth flipping. As a one handed opener without the flipper though it's awesome.

  5. 👍 Good review of this knife. Agree S30v is a good steel with excellent edge holding, but IMHO very difficult to sharpen (especially in the field) and all knives become dull. Although processing an entire Elk without the need to sharpen is impressive. I’ve had very good experiences with Buck’s 420HC steel w/ the Boss heat treat. Regardless of steel choice this is a very useable knife for all the reasons you mention.
