  1. Unfortunately, being in a bigger market can expose players for what they really are. Shattenkirk was never a number 1 defenseman nor should the NHL media treated him as such. When he was with the Blues he was sheltered because of Pietrangelo and didn't have to play against tougher competition. He's a PP specialist and that's it. Watched him for years in Colorado and St. Louis and at best he was a good number 4 defenseman.

  2. If I were GMJB, I'd be on the phone with this guy's agent to snag him at under 2 million. I know there are cap considerations, but a veteran presence who can still play #5-6 D minutes at least would be invaluable.

  3. I remember the Devils were high on him and he turned them down to play for his home town team. Big whew on the part of the Devils. Now I hope the Devils don't go near him.

  4. Man what a fall he was money running the point on the pp for my Blues.I hope he finds it again.

  5. Blues fans have been warning both caps and Rangers fans for the past 3 years that Shattenkirk cannot defend. He simply just can't. Caps found out the hard way, now the Rangers did. When are teams going to learn?! You cannot overpay this guy… The return simply isn't there.

  6. As a Rangers fan I'm very torn on this.

Has he been disappointing since coming over? Absolutely. Do I think he can bounce back? For sure. The d core was a trainwreck last season and Shatty is far from the only one who struggled (how Lindy Ruff still is employed blows my mind).

I fully expect him to sign a 1 year deal elsewhere and contribute, but the NYR having Trouba, DeAngelo, Fox on the right side kind of sealed his fate. DeAngelo, Fox, and Shatty all kind of have similar styles of play so I always figured it was going to be Shatty on the outside looking in. Just never thought it would be a buyout, pretty surprised no team took a flyer on 50% retained for 2 years 3.3 AAV.

  7. I knew shattenkirk wasn’t the real deal, when he got traded to the caps I thought he made them worse

  8. Hey Shannon, I was wondering if in videos where a significant player like Shattenkirk is a free agent/bought out, would it be possible if you could do a prediction on who could pick up said player or where he would fit in best? Just for fun!

  9. horror/thriller author at amazon.com books sez: KS was good at two things–alas only two–as a Blue: the power play and shootouts. If he's–and whatever team picks him up–smart, he'll convert: from a defenseman with some offensive skills to an "offenseman" (a.k.a. a center or winger) with some defensive skills, as he hasn't the size, toughness, or motivation to play defense.
