  1. Wasn't even a prenalty, let alone a major. Refs swallowed their whistles on the icing, what do you want Hathaway to do? He hit him in the shoulder, not from behind. These refs need to be removed from the league immediately. I hope they don't make it out of the stadium. Fucking trash.

  2. Bruins fan here, no dog in this fight. That is an absolute dreadful call. It's clearly not boarding and not interference. This is an unacceptable result.

  3. Terrible job from the refs, whistle should've been called way earlier and all this would've been avoided.

  4. Devils fan here, terribly slow whistle. Doesn't look like a penalty according to the book IMO, but I do think hard hits near the boards are problematic in the NHL, SO MANY INJURIES happen this way. The rules should change to protect the players from excessive force near the boards when there's high risk of injury, especially when the hit is meant to rattle the opponent, pump up the guys, knock a guy out of the play… Whether we like it or not, the game has changed to become more skill-based and player safety is a bigger concern than the past. That said, agreed, blown call.

  5. Pretty weak call, especially after what looked like a pretty thorough review. NHL officiating and discipline really makes much sense. Especially given a lot of the stuff that is completely overlooked. Though to give a little credit where it is due, last night's Wings/Rangers game had a 4:00 high stick call overturned when review clearly showed the Detroit player grabbed a Rangers stick and accidentally hit himself in the face with it. But that kind of sense and reason is rare.

  6. Rule 41 – Boarding

41.1 Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who

checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that

causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or

dangerously. The severity of the penalty, based upon the impact with

the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.

There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the

application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player

applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless

position and if so, he must avoid or minimize contact. However, in

determining whether such contact could have been avoided, the

circumstances of the check, including whether the opponent put

himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously

with the check or whether the check was unavoidable can be

considered. This balance must be considered by the Referees when

    applying this rule.

Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an

obvious “icing” or “off-side” play which results in that player hitting or

impacting the boards is “boarding” and must be penalized as such. In

other instances where there is no contact with the boards, it should be

    treated as “charging.”
