GAME RECAP: Penguins at Flyers (12.02.23) | Guentzel Stays Red Hot

After an exciting two-game road trip, the Pittsburgh Penguins returned back to PPG Paints Arena to host the Philadelphia Flyers for the first game of a home-and-home series. Pittsburgh had two power-play chances in the 1st, but was unable to capitalize on either. Late in the 2nd period, the silence was broken. Kris Letang threw the puck on net looking for a teammate’s stick, but got a bounce off a Flyers stick over the glove and into the back of the net. Philadelphia, however, had a quick answer with a goal of their own from the stick of Tippett. The game had more physicality and pace by the end of the 2nd. A few minutes into the 3rd period, Erik Karlsson threw a puck towards the Flyers’ net. Jake Guentzel was waiting back door and deflected the puck in off his skate to give the Penguins a lead again. The Flyers once again had an answer to the Penguins’ tally, with Laughton scoring shorthanded. With under seven minutes left to play in regulation, Foerster earned a power-play goal for the visitors, giving them a 3-2 advantage. With special teams being the difference maker in the 3rd period, the Penguins pulled Jarry to give them a 6-on-5 advantage for the last minutes of regulation. A Bryan Rust deflection from the hash marks was saved, but Jake Guentzel was able to bat the rebound out of mid-air to all but guarantee overtime with only 11 seconds remaining in the contest. Each team created quality chances throughout the extra frame, but it was the home team that would get a look on the power play after the Flyers were called for Too Many Men on the Ice. The Penguins peppered Philadelphia’s net, but none found their way past the goal line. In the subsequent shootout, Couturier registered the lone goal, giving the Flyers a 4-3 victory.

  1. The PP has cost the team points yet again. Is reirdon really the PP coach? I think literally anyone could coach them to 3 of 37 at home. The personnel combo is not working. And it's not Hoosiers, they don't need 5 passes before they attempt a shot.
