Like Craig Morgan said, it’s about closing the deal rather than the obsession with location

Location doesn’t matter if we can’t get it sealed

Not a fan of the proposed location, but it’s better than being relocated

  2. I don’t like the rumored location.

it is too far from the core east valley residents, again. are we trying to make a financially successful hockey team or trying to make money on real estate for Meurelo? The team isn’t going to profit from condos attached to an entertainment district.

Really hoping I can look back at these threads in 5-10 years and say it worked out really well.

But having the arena be the furthest arena from a population center in the entire league may come back to bite us.

Definitely better than Glendale or a relocation though so I will take the W.

If in 10 years it comes out that we took this land only because Phoenix offered some bullshit deal on it that made it super cheap or that we couldn’t do Mesa Riverview because the NHL said it would take too long to get the arena built and we are still having attendance/relocation issues I may go postal.

I’m going to go against the grain and say I’m okay with the rumored location. Being fairly close to both the 101 and the 51 is pretty good.

And while the distance from towns like Tempe may be about the same as the Glendale arena was as measured by miles, I would argue it’s likely closer to those fans as measured by time traveled. The absolute worst traffic is having to go through downtown phoenix or anywhere near there.

Going up the 51 or the 101 on a weeknight is comparably a much quicker experience.

Also, it’s smart to look at not just where current season ticket holders are, but where future season ticket holders will come from. Scottsdale and Paradise Valley are where the wealth in the valley is concentrated. And hockey culture is stronger than many people think in Scottsdale. I think they’ll thrive being that close to North Scottsdale.

Moreover, this location allows Meruelo to proceed with his plan to build luxury apartments as part of the overall plan, which would likely be the biggest money maker and pay for the whole project by itself. And Meruelo and his private investors will own the land and the building. There’s no one who can kick them out. No one to pay rent to.

So if the Coyotes have a bad few seasons and attendance falls, there won’t be any concerns about them relocating. The whole site is profitable enough that the Coyotes could run at a loss indefinitely and it would be fine.

But when the Coyotes catch fire and have consistent winning seasons, they’re going to pick up huge ticket sales from those wealthy people in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley that will spend good money on seeing a winner.
