Smallest thing. On the 2nd goal, the way he taps Karlsson on one side then steals the puck on the opposite side. So smart. Amazing hockey IQ
I don't watch a whole lot of Hockey, but living in Brantford I see Mike Babcocks face a lot, it's really intense but really funny 🙂

Matthews is a phenomenal player, but a lot of this is just luck. Facing a crappy team on a bad day, with team mates who are consciously trying to feed you the puck. Even with that going for you, even if your Gretzky himself, there's still a lot more that has to be aligned to get 4 goals. It paid off though. I wouldn't be surprised if coaches with hyped first round rookie picks will often tell the players to try and get the rookie to score, think about the incentive. If you can get fans hyped up about the rookie because of a stellar performance in his first game, your guaranteed more viewers and merchandise sales. More people are watching leafs games to this day that wouldn't have otherwise, because of what Matthews did here (I know at least +1 because I'm one of those people). Bottom line = $$$

i mean who wasn't happy when he scored in his first game…
but then he just goes off and rapes the whole team… at that point i was in awe i was blown away
but that wasn't it… what was with awe become sudden shock after he got the hat trick…
and then the quadra kill
quad CORE…
yeah leafs ended up losing but…
i mean a regulation loss can't take away our most sought after prospect chewing the NHL in his FIRST DEBUT
fast forward to late february and who in their right mind would have imagined the leafs fighting for a playoff spot, inching their way to the top with the habs, kadri having a career season, matthews, marner and nylander tearing it up in their rookie seasons, anderson playing like a boss between the pipes, and just the whole team in general playing so well. Rejoice leaf nation for good times are ahead! the worst is behind us and we've survived to witness a whole new era. GO LEAFS GO!!!!!

Two things:
1. As a Sens fan, I thought this was a Leafs home game. Jesus Christ, we suck as filling up our arena.
2. The Leafs still lost that game haha😂
