When A Hockey Game Sparked A Riot

In 2011, The Vancouver Canucks & The Boston Bruins faced off for the Stanley Cup. What would follow, would be one of the most memorable series in NHL History.

  1. Anything that could go wrong went wrong that series for the Canucks. Ran into the hottest goaltender a single series had ever seen, Had freak injuries, given unjust suspension (there’s no way that’s more than 2 mins for interference the only reason it was so bad was cause Horton hit the ice head first), and the league decided prison rules should exist this series (outside of the Rome hit) which was the Bruins specialty.

  2. Don't forget Bruins players brought water from Boston in a water bottle and poured it on canucks ice to make it theirs.

  3. I still remember this series so well. Sitting at my friends house in disbelief in game 7. When they scored the 1st goal, I remember thinking Canucks weren’t going to score a single goal. Thomas was dialed in and they go on to win 4-0.

  4. Illegal pads for tim thomas wilfully ignored, Boychuk breaking Raymond's spine while the puck was in the other corner – no suspension, the most absurd suspension given out in a scf that I've ever seen decided on by the uncle of a Bruins player who had a history of abusing his position when it benefitted his nephew, Daniel Sedin recieving more minor penalties than either Marchand or Thorton – 5 fewer minor penalties than he recieved in the entire 82 games he played in the regular season in just 7 games. The NHL wasn't even trying to prented like this was a legitimate competition.

  5. This was the 2nd time a riot ensued after a playoff loss..embarrassing. As far as getting a bit finger..maybe keep your finger out your opps mouth. I still hate Boston..lol, Tim Thomas really was the man though.

  6. This cup run was what sealed the deal for me as a lifelong Bruins fan. I was about 12 years old, and growing up my dad always watched hockey so I was aware of it and would watch it with him sometimes, but the intensity of this post season and the way everyone in my town celebrated when the Bruins won made it official and I've been a huge hockey fan ever since

Also, since it wasn't really covered in this video, I think its worth mentioning what an absolute MONSTER Tim Thomas was between the pipes. He really made all the difference

  7. As an Oiler fan … who had a hard time cheering for either team … watching the lopsided penalties called against Vancouver while in Boston, and having a Boston player punching a Vancouver player in the face right in front of the ref with no penalty being called, there was no doubt the NHL was giving it to Boston.

  8. I see whoever makes these videos is also actively ignoring the blatant corruption by the nhl that is no longer conjecture and unequivocally proven to be true in favor of the false narrative that the Bruins just "played harder". Its a little easier to play hard when the refs dont call penalties against you and suspend your opponents for the rest of the series for clean hits. Pathetic narrative on this series.

  9. What's crazy is that the 2011 riot could have been prevented! They rioted in '94, too!

The Vancouver denizens remembered, the police remembered; but the mayor did not, and thus made no precautions to mitigate the disaster.

  10. @8:42 "The first goal of [game 7] means everything to both teams." Worth noting that in every game of that series, the team that scored first won the game. Of course, just because it happened 6 times doesn't mean it was fate, but it was still a distinctly chilling feeling when Boston scored first in game 7

  11. Honestly, having lived in the city for both 94 and 2011, It's got nothing to do with the details of the game. This is the same phenomenon (but writ-large) that used to happen after the celebration of light and 420 every year and what used to happen on the south end of downtown Granville St. every weekend between 2005 and 2015. I.e a bunch of bridge and tunnel assholes come into the city and cause problems.

For context I was also in Calgary in 2004, at game 6 of the final where that puck was obviously across the line. That was an actual/far more egregious case of stolen cup from a Canadian team, with far more to be pissed off about…. and you know what 17th ave was pretty peaceful.

I also remember the GNR riots.

This has nothing to do with the opponents or the bad blood, or the facts of the series and actually little to do with Vancouver itself. The lower mainland hosts some of the worst scum in Canada. It's Surrey, Delta, and Burnaby asshats coming in and smashing up the city.

Also, I look forward to the negative ratio on this.

  12. Funny you don't mention that the NHL head of reffing's son was on the Bruins, he suspended Rome for the series, Bruins broke Raymond's back with a dirty hit and not even a penalty, ended his career pretty much, and the Bruins gooned the Canucks the whole series and got away with so much BS it was insane. Not a conflict of interest at all.

Canucks tried to fight back but you can't beat the ultimate bullies with the refs in their pockets, and they got called for lots of penalties where the Bruins got away with so much BS. Then the Canucks got called soft on top of that, while the Bruins were hailed as tough and playing the right way. Took all the skill out of the series and turned it into a brawl and goon show.

  13. If you're going to do it, do it right. You missed the essence of the whole series, you glazed over the absolute consistent bullshit call. How about Raymond getting his back broken then booed on the ice in Boston as he struggled to move. Don't half ass the research

  14. Great video bro, best playoff run of my life for my Bruins. Down 0-2 to the Habs in round 1. Swept Philly after losing 4 in a row to Philly the year before..7 game war with TB with one of the most exciting game 7’s of all time, no penalties were called it was intense. That Canucks series was Awesome. The Bruins punished them and they had zero answers. Remember Roberto whining about Timmy not pumping his tires at all..I always thought he was soft and he showed it in game 7. Lets Go Bruins!!

  15. Horton brought a water bottle of Boston garden shaved ice from the Zamboni to dump on Vancouvers ice. Game 7 was a home ice win for Boston.

  16. Most rigged series I ever saw. Canucks got screwed they won that series it was so rigged Boston was fucking dirty and cheated they had the refs in their pocket. Canucks won the cup that year legit same as Calgary in 04 Canucks in 94 Edmonton in 06 and Montreal in 21 Ottawa got fucked over in 17 too. It’s the fucking refs and Bettman anti Canada which is ridiculous most Americans don’t care about hockey they don’t deserve it.

  17. I remember outside where I live Boston Pizzas change their name to Vancouver Pizza for the duration of the Canucks-Bruins Stanley Cup Playoffs.

  18. The riots were started by people who planned to riots whether Vancouver won or lost. They just wanted to cause destruction and go wild. Hockey was just the excuse.

  19. Injuries did the Canucks in more than anything else. Injuries (Kesler, Malhotra, Hamhuis (did not play after game 2), Samuelsson (did not play in finals), Higgins, Edler and Raymond (did not play after game 6)).

  20. Sedins didn’t do anything in the playoffs, busts in final, but made the hall of fame before Mogilny, what a joke
