[32 Thoughts] I do think Toronto’s taken a look at Philadelphia’s Rasmus Ristolainen … I don’t believe the Flyers are eager to give him away, and there’s no rush for them to do anything while their group is playing well. That’s not to say it couldn’t be something down the road

  1. > I do think Toronto’s taken a look at Philadelphia’s Rasmus Ristolainen, who has three seasons remaining on a five-year, $25.5M contract. But, I don’t believe the Flyers are eager to give him away, and there’s no rush for them to do anything while their group is playing well. That’s not to say it couldn’t be something down the road, but when the team is competing hard, getting good results and generally doing what is being asked of them — why throw a stink bomb into your dressing room?

The full blurb (Had to shorten for the title)

If Briere is not willing to trade a terrible contract at the onset of a rebuild, he’s no better than Fletcher. Difficult decisions need to be made, even if might upset that locker room temporarily. Having the chance to lose a terrible contract is a blessing that should not be taken for granted.

Crazy to think that the guy who was trying to give Sanheim away for free would now want to hold on to Ristolainen. Horrible priorities.

No reason to rush on things – we’re not even half way through December yet and Torts has the team running nicely.

    I trust in Danny.

I believe they’re moving the players as they need to. Win or lose they’re looking better than they did last year. I think that puts them in a good position to wait for the best value for a trade and if they don’t trade him it’s because they’re getting better value by keeping him at the moment.

I can’t believe the hesitancy here to move him. Yes, he’s been better than his absolutely brutal start to his career, but he’s still a 4-5 D at best. Rushing this rebuild because the team is barely clinging to a playoff spot while playing way above their talent level is not the right approach.

If they can get out of that contract they have to.

Danny’s not getting best return if he just jumps on the first offer Toronto sends. He’s playing a bit of hardball. It’s like nobody understands how negotiating works.

  7. I don’t think it makes sense for either team right now. Toronto is still very much in the mix in the Atlantic, and acquiring Rasmus Ristolainen won’t really move the needle. Could they use “playoff physicality”? Sure, but it’s December. And for us, players always bring higher returns closer to the deadline, and because of the player that he is, Risto could have multiple teams interested.

Interesting. I know Risto gets a lot of hate here because he embodies Chuck Fletchers awful contract signings, but despite what the sub thinks he’s played very close to his contract level under torts and isn’t the albatross he used to be. Dude has real value in the league, certainly not what we paid for him, but value.

I wonder how far the tire kicking goes here. Could he as simple as Treliving calling Danny and being like yo what do you value Risto at? Could be more. Either way it speaks volumes that teams are asking about our players this far before the deadline. Risto could fetch a decent return if he keeps playing this well. I imagine we’d have to take back a bad contract as well to maximize the return, but that ability to do so is there for us.

Really shows how good of a start the rebuild is off to. Torts and company has turned one of the most untouchable contracts the team had into an actual viable asset worth calling about. Doubt anything happens unless until closer to the deadline (Toronto is likely calling every team with a towering D man to see what they can get) but I’m getting more and more excited for the TDL

I think if we had a solid guy coming up sure but all of our prospects i’m not sold on yet and even Yam cork is starting to worry me more and more with his sloppy play and penalties.

However getting rid of that terrible contract would be great, I’m sure we’ll be eating some cost but Fletcher really fucked up giving him 7×7, would have been better as a 3×3 or even 4×4 at worst but he really went balls deep. I feel like Danny could get us above water on his contract maybe later in the season.

  10. Lots of bad takes in here.

    1) If Ristolainen is generating interest from a playoff team in December, there is absolutely 0 reason to make a deal unless the return is amazing. I get that Toronto has injuries, but if Risto is in the conversation he’s obviously going to generate more interest towards the deadline.

    2) Like it or not, the Flyers are making strides and a marginally decent this season. I don’t get the feeling they are gonna undo that just to get a better pick. And rightfully so.

    3) It’s kind of funny how Risto’s horrible advanced metrics were plastered all over this sub during his first year here. He’s made noticeable improvements in most areas of his game.

    4) His contract isn’t *that* bad now. Like it’s not going to make or break a rebuild. If we’re being dead to earth honest here. Sanheim at 6.25 until 2031 and Coots at 7.75 till 2030 are way more of a roadblock to bringing in more talent down the line.
