Detroit Red Wings player Dylan Larkin was down motionless on the ice after a very concerning injury. Yet it didn’t look like he really got hit that hard.

  1. Concussion is still certainly the first thing to think of here, so don’t think this video is me saying that’s not possible. This is just an alternative pathology to think about when the blow to the head wasn’t as intense as we can often see in hockey

  2. Thank you for the, as always fantastic diagnosis of these injuries that you cover..
If I had a doctor like you around when I was working NYC as an EMT ambulance driver back in the neanderthal 80sI would have still been involved..( never really stopped just isn't my means of income)

  3. Not enough of a head blow? You don’t play hockey, do ya? You don’t do much of ANYTHING, is our guess…
We’ll look you up if we need someone to incessantly yammer, alright?

  4. The head blow was the butt end of a stick on the back of his neck pushing him into a the butt end of a stick hitting him in the jaw, you can't see this because players wear gloves, but if you know whats hitting him, this is a pretty obvious concussion. So Doctor if a stick is being pressed on the back of your neck and another stick hits you in the jaw, what do you think will happen? Dont need a doctor for this if you know whats hitting him. Your not looking at the right angle on this hit, which is why your kissing #27 stick hitting him in the jaw.

  5. So looks like 21 is pushing on his left side of his neck, where 27 hits him on the right side of the neck, sandwiching his neck, he goes out n then hits his head on the ice. I think what you're talking about took him out, but ice isn't forgiving n he also could have a concussion from the fall to the ice. Prayers go out to him.

  6. Looks pretty clear #27 caught him in the face and he was heading in. Right on the jaw line and can see the immediate head whip back a bit

  7. Anytime you see a player lay motionless you think the worst.
Given Larkins previous similar injuries, it's more troubling.
    Hope he is OK

  8. The first blow created a downward force that magnified the impact of the second blow. Both were just hockey plays but the combination of the forces meeting made it really bad. It was the second blow that TKO'd him not the first and not his head hitting the ice.

  9. Apparently this "doctor" has never been hit in the chin or knocked unconscious. Larkins head was sent forward by a cross-check to the neck. A split second later he took a blow to the side of his chin by a fist and the butt end of a stick. His head got jarred. That's all it takes "Doc". When boxers get hit in the chin they are known to drop unconscious on many occasions.

  10. I was watching this at the game. It was truly terrifying. Although one thing that cheered me up was that anytime Joseph (21) got the puck the whole crowd started booing.

  11. to say its not a lot of contact when he got crosschecked to the head/neck is pretty nutty dude lol.

  12. At a certain point I hope Larkin takes legal action towards Matthieu Joseph for blatantly trying to end Larkin’s career. That is the third questionable thing Joseph has done to him.

  13. I got crosschecked in the neck when i was younger, pretty much in the same spot on the neck. It slid a vertebrae sideways and pinched a nerve down my right arm. I just about passed out. I could hear my teammates saying that I was turning green.

  14. I think the butt of Kelly’s stick hit him in the Trigeminal and Mandibular Nerves located within the region of the jaw/lower mouth.

I do agree that Kelly’s blow was more likely to have caused syncope.

  15. #21 and #27 will be well taken care of on January 31st when these teams meet again. This is hockey, and when the refs shit to bed, the players will police themselves. Hopefully they take Tkachuks face and make it a permanent part of the ice. You don't fuck with a teams captain, and this is completely unacceptable in hockey terms….

  16. 21 (Johnson?) intentionally hits him hard (no push) in the side of the head. Knocked him out. If not then, then his forehead into the ice finishes the KO. Simple to see, Doc.

  17. CSH is good option to go with from the video at hand. My guess the butt end of #27’s stick, maybe combined with the palm, made contact with Larkin’s jaw en route to his neck/shoulder. What is REALLY throwing me is after both of these events, when he should be unconscious, you see Larkin’s left hand pull up and toward his neck. It looks too intentional to be unconscious floppy arm. That’s the correct medical term, right?

  18. I really hope Larkin is ok and can play tomorrow!? I like this video and what's said in this video does seem to make more sense with what happened there cuz when I 1st saw injury I was confused cuz it doesn't look like much but then Larkin collapses on ice!!?? Definitely doesn't look like there was anything there to cause him to be concussed but I could be wrong!? But this guys thoughts in this video seem to be more probable and does kinda look like that could've been what happened!? Kinda looks like it was probably Kelley's hand going into Larkins neck area that caused it!? Kinda looks like he probably punched/hit that carotid area and it effected Larkins blood pressure and caused him to go out!? Larkin mightve been lucky that he Kinda was falling into Kelley's cuz if he hadn't Falken into him he could've fallen to ice head 1st and gotten hurt even more!? It really kinda looks like the shot from kelley with his hand going into larkins neck is what caused him to go down!? I really really hope he's ok!? He's dealt with enough lately he needs to be able to just have fun and play hockey!!?

  19. Hey Doctor,
Do you have any connections with the NHL? You produced this pretty quickly without much empathy for what Larkin went through. Hopefully you have not been paid by the NHL to produce this video.
Thank you and have a good day.

  20. Love when Doc covers hockey injuries, this was scary but learned something I never knew before here. Even if this was just a concussion.

  21. The hit by Joseph looks subtle, but getting punched/cross checked in the neck is a very easy way to injure someone. Jamie Benn cross checked Larkin's neck years ago, and Joseph took a run at Larkin two years ago, and hit his neck into the boards.

Shame players hit people's necks. Joseph is going to seriously injure someone like what Todd Bertuzzi did

  22. 27 clearly clips his jaw man I know you're an expert but I can see. All momentum was heading one way and his jaw hit a wall that he didn't see coming.

  23. At 3:20 you are wrong…the butt of the stick from Kelly made contact with his Jaw….the force from behind and blunt force in front would have knocked him out along with his preexisting injury…you must be an Ottawa fan… .smh …it was a dirty play all around !!!

  24. Wow, thats kind of incredible. I had no idea your body actually monitored your blood pressure and find it interesting that outside pressure can have an affect on the part that does monitor it.

  25. Both Kelly, and Joseph targeting head/neck area. Should both be fined and suspended, this crap needs to be out of the game.
