Button: ‘All Nick Cousins’ hit on Gudbranson deserved was a two-minute penalty’

It was a rowdy night in the National Hockey League, with Nick Cousins hitting Erik Gudbranson from behind and a melee ensuing with Gudbranson, and Ryan Strome’s knee-on-knee on Kyle Connor. TSN’s Director of Scouting Craig Button joins Jay Onrait to discuss the potential suspensions that could come down.

  1. Cousins made no attempt whatsoever to get to the inside shoulder. It was clear in the numbers. How anyone can defend that hit is beyond me. Both should be suspended for their actions and while you're at it suspend the official a few games as well. To send a message that player safety should always be a priority not just whenever the officials feel like it. If Gudbranson had suffered a serious injury on the play Button would be throwing the book at Cousins.

  2. Totally believe Cousins deserves a suspension for this one. Direct hit from behind he could have left on a stretcher. It was a vicious hit from behind. The N.H.L. SAFETY is ridiculous! Disgraceful.

  3. one more commenter jumping on Button. If he had skated in the last 50 years he might remember whats its like to have your career threatened by hits like that. I only wish other Jackets would have challenged Cousins to a fight, because 2 minutes is not going to get rid of dirty hits like that.

  4. Button has always been wrong about pretty much everything.Intent doesn't matter, it was a reckless play.Just look at the angle Gudbranson's head hit the boards. It is just luck that a tragedy was avoided.

  5. The Cousins hit on Gudbranson should have been a five minute major and game misconduct, as Gudbranson never had possession of the puck and never actually touched it on the play.
That would have controlled the temperature of the game between the Panthers and Jackets somewhat, but the referees clearly dropped the ball on this incident.
Gudbranson will get suspended but no one in the Jacket's organization should blame him for what he did in response, and for his part, Cousins should also be suspended.

  6. I normally agree with Button but he is wrong on the hit on Gudbranson. It was a dangerous hit when he was 5 feet from the boards and he skated through the hit. Just because he was not grieviously injured does not make it better. If he had been ejected (like he should have been) incident 2 would not have happened . I agree with " that dude conz" below that if it was a superstar the result would be different, all players deserve to be protected by the rules.

  7. I disagree, Cousins absolutely launches into the numbers. That's a really dangerous hit and it should have been 5. And then none of the rest of it would have happened. Gudbranson could have ran him from behind and put Cousins out for a while, but instead he just gave him a beatdown. Just fine him and move on.

  8. I think you've got this one wrong Craig. Cousins engages with the back of the player in a dangerous position away from the boards and follows through with force driving him into the boards from behind. That absolutely deserved 5, and the cuts should have at least ensured 4. Refs failed to enforce the play and what happened later is on them. Also on Cousins for not answering the call for what he started. Players around the league should take note of his failure to answer the bell and make sure they start running him out of the arena. Does not belong in the NHL.

  9. Boarding and hitting from behind is not a suspension if the player on the recieving end doesn't get hurt eh Button? Like nah bad take, that's a 5 minute major & match penalty. Refs got this one wrong and Button sounds like a plug for the league to justify not penalizing Cousins properly.
