GAME RECAP: Penguins vs. Coyotes (12.12.23) | Carter Nets Two Goals

Tuesday night the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the Arizona Coyotes. Only 48 seconds into the game, the Penguins went on the power play. Looking to break the power play-scoring drought, Sidney Crosby gave Jake Guentzel a pass from behind the goal line. Guentzel took a quick wrist shot blocker side and just squeezed it past the Arizona netminder. This was a bit of a foreshadowing moment as all the goals in the 1st involved special teams with a total of seven penalties between the two clubs. Halfway through the 1st, Arizona struck back with a goal from Lawson Crouse and Jason Zucker getting the assist. The coyotes struck again but this time Matias Maccelli, with Crouse on the assist. After taking the fourth penalty for Pittsburgh, Jeff Carter went on a short-handed breakaway, throwing a small shoulder fake and shooting it in the net off his backhand. The 1st ended tied at 2-2. The 2nd period had a much calmer tone to it. Both teams were able to settle down and get a flow of line changes going, trying to get that perfect match-up. Heading into the 3rd, the score remained tied. Once again on the power play, Kris Letang took a shot from the point. Carter in front of the net tipped it past Connor Ingram to take the lead. This was Carter’s 90th game-winning goal in his career. The Penguins held the lead for the remainder of the game. Padding that lead with an empty net was Guentzel in the last few minutes of the game. Penguins won 4-2.

  2. I just want to note that if they didnt score those 2 power play goals, the game mightve gone to OT 2-2. Shows how important a good power play is.
