This is a surprise, really thought the 2019 Cup earned him more time to turn things around.

  1. Coming from a lifelong STL fan, this is on the GM (Armstrong). He has done a poor job the past three years with bad signings and a lack of good resignings. Chief was not the problem. The roster makes no sense.

  2. OK, Berube gone.

Hockey guy doing OT, its 2:15am EST.

Must be Pacific Time in your timezone, 11pm. Still late, but 2am here. KEEP UP THE GRUELING work!!!

  3. An absolute BS panic move. I have never been in this camp but Armstrong needs to go. I am beyond sad rn

  4. Stars fan, as much as I hate the Blues. Berube was definitely not the problem, doubtful this new interim coach turns it around for the Blues.

  5. Chief is a scapegoat, Army needs to go. He locked up a horrid Dcore and half of our forwards are overpaid and cant play hockey. Team has no identity and it's all the GM's fault. That bum needs to go.

  6. Tonight we lost to a team made up of guys who would be wearing the note if Armstrong had an ounce of sense. Berube was given a team of retreads and castoffs from other teams fronting a troupe of Armie's bad contracts and a passle of untried new kids. Armie ignoring leading scorers (Perron) and let genuine stars walk in free agency over no-trade clauses (Petro, O'Reilly) and let's make that Chief's fault because he didnt make a silk purse from Armstrongs sows ear? Right. Sure. You betcha. Fire Armie.

  7. As much as I was a Berube believer (as little as 8 games ago), this is the correct move. There was no fire in either player nor coach regarding playing these last few games (which could have had a completely different outlook had they won them or at least had good outings but no results) and instead looked eerily similar to last years no show/no compete team. That is the losing culture that Armstrong doesn’t want to creep back in and is not the type of groundwork a “retooling” franchise needs. It’s unacceptable to play the way they did during that stretch and Berube is as responsible as the players are so back to the ole adage ‘You can’t fire the whole team so we fired the coach’.

  8. Cannot believe this. I mean read the depth chart. This team is lucky to be 1 game under 500. Armstrong has made no effort to improve the defense. The forward groups are hodgepodge of Young inexperienced players(Neighbors Torpchenko), good depth veterans(Sunquisdt,Hayes) and players still finding their groove(Thomas,Kyrou) at an NHL level. To think this is Berube’s fault is a next level mess up. Unless you’re all in on a rebuild, this move is stupid and will bite Armstrong.

  9. Sorry to see Berube go. But, for him this will probably turn out to be a blessing in disguise. He didn’t deserve to have to coach this mess of a team that Armstrong created. With so many overpaid underperforming players on long term NTC contracts, the team’s going to be a bottom dweller for many years. Meanwhile, Berube will get another NHL head coaching job and he’ll do fine.

Side note: I believe that Berube’s family lives in the Philadelphia area. So, though being fired is no fun, at least this should result in more holiday time with the family than he’s had in years.

  10. With this firing, Doug Armstrong has cemented himself as the worst GM in the NHL. Berube was only used as a scapegoat so that he could keep his job.

  11. This makes me sick. I can’t get behind it. Not an Armstrong hater, but this is a move that doesn’t have an upside. Even if the team makes the playoffs (which is a long shot). How far do you think this roster will go?

  12. As a Blues fan, I was shocked and saddened when I saw this news. I never thought Craig Berube was the problem. Doug Armstrong has done some brilliant moves and some questionable moves as GM of the Blues. This falls under one of the questionable moves. Craig Berube certainly left his mark in St. Louis and that is something that no other coach of the St. Louis Blues has done and that's win a Stanley Cup. I will miss him as coach of the Blues and I hope Drew Bannister does well as the Blues' coach. I will be at their game against Ottawa.

  13. I’m surprised and bummed he’s out. He’s a great coach and did not deserve to be let go immediately after the game.

  14. Well, this is quite the news to get at 1 in the morning…

Yeah they were sputtering, but I thought they'd at least let him finish the season. He'll find a job in the NHL soon. He's a good coach with the resume to back it up. Wouldn't be surprised if Buffalo, Columbus, or a few other struggling/rebuilding teams give him a look. At least he has a Cup to his name and he'll always have that 2019 turnaround

  15. Berube losing his job before Christmas just gives him an extended holiday tbh. It's not like he's going to be without an income now. He'll still be paid by the Blues, and honestly, he won't be out of work long. I bet he's back in the league next season.

  16. Doug Armstrong is the one that should be fired. This disastrous roster is completely his fault. This team is full of terrible contracts w/NTC and overpaid players. Kyrou is a perfect example of this, the guy is weak, lazy, and has the hockey IQ of a rock. Everyone knows if you are physical and pressure him he’s a turnover machine. FIRE ARMSTRONG!

  17. I’m not shocked, but I’m upset at this move. Chief is a great coach. This squad that Armstrong has put together was not willing to work together. Armstrong is now on the clock. I guess if this franchise doesn’t make
    Playoffs next year he’s out.

  18. I really would not say the firing of Woodcroft had anything to do with the Oilers turnaround. They sucked when he was the coach and they sucked for several games after. And their turnaround, shockingly, happened at the same time as McDavid apparently healed up, Leon started heating up and the goaltending got better. How much of that can you attribute to the coach? I would not say too much.

  19. Given the recent sackings of coaches, I saw this coming given how the Blues have been playing; I still strongly believe that the one who should have been fired is Armstrong.
I am going to miss Berube, I cannot imagine the bench without the chief, and wish him all the best. It's such a shame, he is one of a kind, I am going to miss him.

  20. Anyone in stl that has been paying attention know this was coming. This team had been more bipolar than any of our worse girlfriends. It's not berube's fault but someone has to take the fall

  21. Such a wrong decision but there are so many other teams with worst record and worst coaches pretty sure he will get another job

  22. From watching them against the Coyotes, they seem to be playing as well as the players they have. They look like a team with no direction or structure, and that comes from the very top (the GM)

  23. Cant really blame Berube for the bad acquisitions Army has made. I really want to see blues enter rebuild, which they should have done last year already. Since Kyrou got his 8×8 Ive been questioning alot of decisions Army has made. I dont think the intention of firing was to find scapegoat for the situation, I truly believe Army wanted to save Berubes face a little so he doesnt get the full blame for bad results and inevitable rebuild we are entering. Like a true leader, he takes the blame, as he is huge reason for these dissappointing results and acquisitions.

I've been very vocal about Army and his mistakes for the past month while the fanbase just blamed Chief. Got so much hate for hating the "2 time stanley cup winner GM who build our 2019 roster". Now that Chief is gone like the fans wanted, only NOW all of them gang up on Army? Feels like fans gotta have someone to blame to justify. The problem isnt Berube, it isnt Army or the team. It's all of them combined.

Maybe (and I sure hope it does) this triggers the rebuild phase we really need after, not just some retool where we try to be competetive after we get rid of bad defence contracts. Who can we replace the defence with? We truly need some depth in our system and something for the future. Its not sustainable to stay in the limbo do we make to playoffs or not.

Army is entering in his last dance as Blues GM. No more room for mistakes now or he's gone for sure.

  24. I really hope this doesn't bite the blues in the popka long term. Berube is the best coach in blues history.

  25. Our powerplay is in shambles. Our team is so passive on the powerplay. I joke every time that we have the best passing powerplay in all of the NHL. Our penalty kill is almost as bad. WE HAVE MORE SHORTHANDED GOALS THAN POWERPLAY GOALS. Change needed to happen. Unfortunately, the easiest way to try and make a change is to drop the coach. Do I think it is all Berube's fault? Any Blues fan that says they did not see this coming is lying to themselves or still living in 2019. I said at the beginning of the season that this could be Berube's last year. I just thought he would make it to the all star break at least.
