Would the Washington Capitals ever scratch Alex Ovechkin. The Ethan Bear deal looks close

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about what should the Capitals do with Alex Ovechkin. He only has 5 goals on the season, is there a possibility the Caps would ever consider scratching him? Later Dan talks about how it appears that the deal to get Ethan Bear is close. The Caps are the frontrunners because they’re willing to offer term. The Caps make it two in a row as they pickup big wins over the New York Rangers and the Chicago Blackhawks. What’s behind their success?

  1. They simply wont scratch Ovi, he still brings leadership and he isnt that bad for a guy who is 39. I watch every game and he does get scoring chances, he just isnt capitalizing. I think he has a bit of bad luck and he should turn it around. Absolutly love the show Dan! Keep it up!

  2. They wont scratch Ovi. Thays a terrible decision for MANY reasons. But they will absolutely limit his ice time and take him off the power play.
Bear coming to the caps is interesting, I've liked him quite a bit since he was with Edmonton. Not sure it'll work but here's hoping it comes true and works like a dream.
I take back what I said about Marty. He's looked locked in the last 2 games.

  3. Don't know how I feel about us looking at another right handed D in Bear. More interested in Kuzmenko, though I was even more interested in getting Vrana back off waivers. A Vrana/Kuzy/Oshie line could be good. Though it looks like he never ended up getting placed on waivers.

  4. We have to remember Mantha is in a contract year. Not unusual for players in contract years to have really good years.

  5. As far as I’m concerned, OV could go out there with a walker and skate around in circles, and I’d be ok with that…he’s done so much for this team, he deserves some grace.

  6. I saw this coming. He was basically MIA post coming back from Russia last season. Is his heart still in it after his dad died? Is he being a family man interfering with his fitness and dedication (it's honestly ok if it is). If so though he needs to hang up the skates. IDC if he's owed millions he needs to do the right thing or they need to LTIR for the rest of the contract. If they can't find a solution to him being a liability on the ice then he's GTG. Can't have 9.5m in cap space eaten up by a waste of space. Yes, it's sacrilege talking about Ovi in those terms but it's what hes become.

  7. Remember a few weeks back I suggested ovi take an “injury” break and go though a training regimen that would make rocky balboa jealous.

  8. I hate to say it but Ovi looks like an amateur at times. His board battles are absolutely horrible. He is slow to make decisions. Frustrating to watch!
I actually cheer when he doesn’t screw up.
    😢

  9. Wow Dan!- Craziest headline to locked on I’ve seen! Lol. I’ve mentioned several times that there seems to be multiple issues, I hate it, I hate seeing him struggle at all! Healthy scratch tho?! Never. I see them trying everything before that… like an injury (undisclosed) or something. Ok, now I’ll hit play lol

  10. Ok, he’s still leading the team in points and it seem to me he is playing my ch better defensively in Carbery’s system. While Strome is playing well, he is not prime Backstrom or Kuznetzov (when he was elite). The powerplay stinks because we lose every opening face off and then rarely enter the zone clean. Over the years the Caps gained a lot of momentum (especially Alex). The fact he is still leading the team in points is amazing, but finding a top 2 skilled puck moving forward is important, they open seams, delay and wait for plays to develop etc. A Matt Barzal type of player.

  11. At the end of the day it’ll come down to what Ovi wants to do. If he thinks ice time will get him back in the groove they’ll keep playing him, otherwise he’ll voluntarily do an IR stint. Truly wonder what he thinks the issue is, or if he’s content to dish out passes and be a decoy for Tommy and Stromer.

  12. Its a tough thing to see the great 8 not scoring but I think where the capitals are in very excited to see if they can go on a deep run .

  13. As bad as he is performing right now, the thing that baffles me is he is STILL the leading point scorer on the team. At this point, how we are very much still in contention for a playoff spot is just black magic.
