As a Canuck fan, I'd like to thank OEL for giving up the puck for Joshua's first goal. It was good to see you back in form.
Do you still think it was wrong to buy him out? I saw him on the ice for at least 2 of th goals.
It worked out well for perhaps both parties. I don’t need to say much about how much better the nucks is doing with the cap space freed by his buyout and what not- but I also think it worked out for OEL. Even if we are not looking at the fact that he still got paid $20M by Van over the next several years, he would have never lived up to that 8 year contract that Jimbo took over from Arizona. He would have just become almost the next Louie Eriksson as far as the fans are concerned, which I doubt would make hockey fun for him here. Yes I know he was injured when he was in Van, but at his age and considering how early we were into his contract, it was doomed from the beginning, OEL being healthy or not. With his current contract in Florida, they’re getting their money’s worth, OEL is getting all the minutes and trust from the coaching staff. I’m honestly happy for him because he’s a nice person and he deserves everything he’s getting in Florida, but I’m happier for Vancouver given what we have done after buying him out. We just couldn’t afford to wait for another couple years hoping things will work out for him. And let’s be honest, us fans wouldn’t be happy with him even if he’s playing the way he is in Florida, again, because of the price tag he came with.
