The New York Islanders Beat the Maple Leafs Because Bo Knows OT

The New York Islanders got a big OT goal from Bo Horvat to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3. The Isles blew a 3-1 lead after a very strong first 20 minutes. Ilya Sorokin kept them in the lead until the closing seconds but Bo bailed them out.

We have our hero and goat of the game plus we mention John Tavares’ 1,000th point which unfortunately came against his old team.

Plus we ask about Oliver Wahlstrom’s future as he has not been in the lineup recently.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Great that they won, but they are still playing with matches giving up goals in the last couple of seconds. It’s only a matter of time before it blows up their face.

  2. They are looking better. Even then third was better again, despite playing like assholes for the last minute. Gil, do you have any insight into why the Isles have so little success in scoring EN goals?

  3. Hi Gil, it was exciting game last night 🎉 I had fantastic seats for 20 dollars 💵 behind the goal 🥅 post 13 rows up 🆙 i was happy for john Tavares 😊 it’s hard to believe he left about 6 years ago. I might go Wednesday! Good job Gil 🎉let’s go islanders ❤

  4. The only thing that disappointed me was the Ises didn't score more on the leaky Somsonov, but he played well and had to make some grade A saves to keep it close. I don't really feel they blew this lead. 6 on 5 against that roster is a tough task. 4 of the best forwards in the league rotating lines for the last 2 minutes and what they got was a greasy goal. The response in OT was awesome and shows what happens when a shooter misses the net and hits the back boards. That pass and finishing shot were awesome. Have the Isles finally made the transition from a purely defensive mentality to a team that believes they can win by scoring? We'll see, but the last few games are a good start.

  5. Good morning team. Gil, another great episode. Thank you so much for what you do. I'm extremely happen any time the Islanders can manage 2 points. I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, but it would be much better, in controlling my stress level, if they can win a few of these games in regulation. Oh how the tables have turned. I like to see the hard work on the ice. The team is liking and getting very used to winning, and it feels good. Yes, they gave up another lead at the end there, but they knew there was still a game to play. Bo, nice OT goal! Everyone have a great day! See you all again tomorrow. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  6. Gm Gil. I was generally pleased. The team needs to be able to net the puck when the opposing team pulls their goalkeeper. There was definitely a let down in the 2nd period. Amazingly, the Isles have to be one of the hotter teams in the league right now.

  7. As quickly they got onto a losing streak, with a blink of an eye they’re on a winning streak. Ahhhhh, the rollercoaster life of an Islanders fan 😂😂

  8. To be honest I never really was mad at John Tavares for leaving. Garth Snow and management were the ones who deserved the majority of the blame for that situation. It's dumb to just take a guys word for it that he's going to re sign. Either get the contract done early, or trade him. Also in the 9 years he was on Long Island they never put a team around him that could win, basically wasting the prime of his career. Who did he have for help? Matt Moulson and Kyle Okposo? It's unfortunate that he left just as the Isles were turning it around though. If Tavares had stayed to play for Trotz and with Barzal, he probably would have a cup by now.

  9. A great win, after yet another late equaliser by opposition in the dying seconds and then do what we couldn't in the beginning; winning in OT. Another impressive win. Kudos to Tavaras, even if he left us in a terrible state in the worst way possible.

  10. I know I have been down on Anders Lee, but I must admit he's been playing better as of late. Also, believe it or not, I believe the absence of P & P and Aho has been a Blessing! Bortozzo and Reilly have been a huge asset to this team. Wonder what will happen when they are ready to return, as this lineup seems to working very well.

  11. Haven’t commented in a while. Putting Lee with Barzy and Bo (also Bo has more speed than I thought!) is perfect because he creates space for them and he can score those greasy goals. They don’t miss Pelach or Martin right now. In the second period Mafield, Reilly and Dobber all rushed the puck behind the net within minutes, I couldn’t believe it. Leafs were overwhelmed and missing 3 of their own starting D. Still haven’t played rhe Rangers, not until Feb 18th outside…got a long road trip coming up. Tavares doesn’t have much left anyway and I wouldn’t boo him if I was there last night.

  12. so many great things about this game, love it when the Isles defend their blue line the way they did, strong chip and chase game, and forecheck. good stuff. LGI!!

  13. New York fans are classless. I'm not a Leaf's fan, but every other city would have the class to applaud when a player reaches 1000 career points.

  14. Another undeserving W. Isles living dangerously. Isles have ot luck right now. Those things have a habit of evening out over a season. And if isles get to playoffs and blow leads like that ot wont be as forgiving 5×5 since isles are weak 5×5. Isles should be happy bettman created the loser point. In old days after blowing third/late lead you settled for tie or went to ot. No score you took your point and went home. NO LOSER POINT FOR YOU.
And onto pj judas. Some are asking if pj judas now with 1000 pts. yet no major awards or a s c title is a hall of famer? Of course he is. He has the one tangible that gets 1000 pt. players into the hall. He played for laffs. Thats all t o biased hall voters care about. I hope pj judas goes into the hall cupless. He can join other cupless 1000 pt. members like thornton, marleau, and scumbag/isle villian dale hunter who got to 1000 pts. simply by averaging 50 pts. a season over 20 seasons. And no one gives a shit that hunter has 1000 pts. A deserved 1000 pts. for pj judas for never playing d or giving a shit about d end going back to his jr. days as a spoiled exceptional player-the first jr. to get that status.
Also keep reilly. Dump aho to ahl.

  15. So as inconsistent as the Islanders have played this year, and quite frankly I think I'm understating it, they are in 10th place overall in the league and 2nd in their division

  16. Hi Gil! Listen these new guys have simply given us life! Some guys have awoken and some guys have simply come into their own. It’s obvious Whalstrom’s days are numbered. Matty is now a reserve. He’s gonna trade the number 1—we know he will! How about a number 1, Whalstrom and Bolduc or Aho for a scorer? Let’s get greedy Gil, why not? Remember when we traded for Bomber and Hubie Mcdonah and that team went on a tear to make it? Getting Reilley and Tuzz remind me of that! Finally, finally Dobber is becoming a star!! Slowly but surely! Some of the boys said give him time and I stand corrected. Simon? We’ll keep making me eat crow kid—it’s starting to taste good!! —-getting tied? Geez let’s keep the elephant in the closet please!! New blood, speed and some skill is paying off!! Let’s not take the foot off the pedal with the Ducks! Bo? Well I never worries about Bo—-Bo knows! Barzie—well give him a player and we see the results. Give him a scorer and let’s dream again! Take care Gil—just keep it going!! Ps—he can shove his last 500 points!!

  17. Wahlstrom have all of the physical talent and skill is bigger problem is he doesn’t have any hockey sense, he doesn’t know where to go to get open to get his shot off and it’s hard to learn that so unfortunately I think he’s going to be a bust as far being a consistent 30goal scorer everybody envision for him
