Dangle: Bernier to the AHL

Jonathan Bernier has been sent to the AHL for a conditioning stint and the hourglass on the Leafs’ goaltending situation pours closer to decision time. Steve Dangle tries to wrap his head around this decision with Bernier and what it might mean.

  1. I hate the leafs but you re gonna take sparks who hasn't proven himself at all (Edmonton last in the league) over bernier? idk

  2. this gives us a chance to see if Bernier is in a slump or has just lost the skill to be an NHL goalie , if Bernier does poor then the leafs can put him on waivers and not worry about losing him , if he does well he can come back up and improve on his 0 wins this season. either way it is a good thing for the Leafs as a whole

  3. Who are the Leafs going to trade Reimer to? Usually teams that trade for goalies at the deadline are teams that have a good team in front of them but bad goaltending, like last year with Minnesota with Dubnyk and before that St. Louis with Ryan Miller. However this year there are few teams that need goaltending upgrade and that are likely going to make the playoffs. So while it might be a good idea for the Leafs to trade Reimer I don't think there is a team that would be wiling to trade for him, and not wait until he becomes a UFA and get him without having to trade any pieces to the Leafs.

  4. A little similarity to the Blackhawks sending Bickell down to Rockford to get his head back in the game

  5. In my honest opinion this is the best thing for everyone regardless. Jonathan Bernier has been good in previous games but something this year isn't right with him. I don't know if the ending of last season is still hanging over him, but he's become the James Reimer of last season. Sending him down to the AHL is the best thing that can happen for him at this point, but right now it's a waiting game. I'm happy that Reimer and Sparks are our 1-2. Reimer has been sensational thus far and I'm really glad he's back to form. Garret Sparks got the win the Leafs were looking for and he can do well as a back-up. The only question that remains is this. Even if Jonathan Bernier gets back to the level of his game where he can play for the Leafs, will they call him back up? Plus if I'm Bernier, I don't think this is that bad. Sure it's the AHL but all he has to do is drive past the Air Canada Center on his way to Ricoh Colesium. He still gets to live in Toronto and heck the Marlies do get to play at the ACC on occasion.

  6. Hopefully this works for Bernier, he's lost the respect of several fans including myself. If not, ship him out for a 7th rounder

  7. Asset or $4 million liability?

I know my Bruins did something similar with Max Talbot in shipping him down to the AHL this year and he was eventually put on waivers with Landon Ferraro [son of TSN announcer, Ray] taking his place.

  8. habs do that to their players too. like jarred tinordi. You won't send someone you are guaranteed to lose through waivers. If bernier gets his shit together, I'll be happy. I like him as a goalie. If not, then you guys need to dump him. However, what if you have another dubnik situation ?

  9. it's a great move to hopefully increase value to an asset. Bernier can work on his stuff (along with his shrink), and be brought up to play with respectability. Clearly, at least to me, Bernier will not be a Leaf, as he seems to be a bit fragile mentally. 2016-17, Optimus-Reim and the Al-Spark!!!

  10. He's done it again, getting a shutout in the AHL like it was his prime days back with Manchester. Garret will be okay, I'm sure of that, this is a good move.

  11. Considering Bernier has back to back shut outs in back to back games… I think it was a smart move. Lol

  12. Not hating, but why is this video on the Sportsnet Channel? I know Steve works for Sportsnet but it's about the leafs and not talking about something around the league. Just wondering.

  13. I love Steve Dangles coverage. So in depth. I wish we had someone to cover canucks stuff as well as he does for the leafs.
