when player leaves team to become free agent, cap space freed up can be as good or better than trade? teams could be better off letting some players walk to free agency?

Raanta's on waivers and Edmonton is down 3-0 to the Panthers tonight after one period where Pickard only faced 15 or so shots… I feel like they'd be nuts not to at least pick him up. All they'd have to do is send down Pickard and one forward, probably Erne. Worst case scenario they put him back through waivers.

Nylander gave them a discount with the idea that the other big three would too. Matthews and Marner took every penny. Why should Nylander get less than Marner, he has outplayed him in the playoffs and goals are more valuable than assists, so it can be argued he outplayed him in the regular season too?

This situation is 100% Dubas' incompetence!
So many people believe Dubas is some kind of GM wonder boy, and I'd like to ask these people exactly what did Dubas do that any Leaf fan, or anyone else for that matter, couldn't have done?
A good GM never accepts the first number an agent forwards, instead, good GMs come back with a counter offer lower than the maximum amount they'll pay, and the haggling goes on like that, with both sides tendering counter offers until they reach a number they both feel is fair market value.
Dubas, on the other hand, completely caved to the "core four" and signed these players to the very first number which must have come as an incredible surprise!!
I firmly believe Dubas sabotaged his own extension, knowing this season he would be completely exposed as being an incompetent pro GM in greatly hindering the team to repair their defense through blowing a huge portion of the cap budget and losing picks via rental player trades.
In effect, Dubas sewed Treliving ass to the locker room carpet making it extremely difficult to rebuild defense by making any trades "money in money out"!
And does anybody really believe there was no tampering with the Pens hiring Dubas as GM and president within a very short time period after leaving exactly what he asked for in term and money.
He had his agent call with demanding both GM and president!! He tried to burn the very person, Shanahan, who fought to secure the position making him Leaf GM, and going to bat AGAIN for the ingrate convincing ownership Dubas deserved a raise and a multi year extension!!
So, not only did Dubas cause serious damage to the team, he also showed his true colors in literally attempting to screw his "good buddy"
Just wait until the Pens realize Dubas has zero managerial skills and will top out the Pens cap room and empty their draft pick cupboard!!
It was awesome seeing Dubas' beat red face at the 7 – el zippo thrashing his team was treated to without Matthews!!
The sad reality here is the ignant fans will attack him mercilessly because of the shitty situation he inherited from Dubas., the little engine that couldn't!!

Nylander knows that there are several teams that can pay him 11-12 mil per year. 11 mil in Anaheim is far better than 9 in Toronto. Teams like Anahein, Arizona, Nahsville and even Detroit can afford to give him top money and not loose anything significant from their roster by doing do. So Toronto is gonna have to give him that 11 times 8 or trade him at the deadline or loose him for nothing in the summer. Nylander is gonna get his money. It's jus a matter of who will give it to him.
The situation in Toronto is just dumb, really dump. It's been clear for the past many Stanley cup winners that you need to have a balanced 4-line team, built upon a solid top-4 defense core. If they trade Nylander, they have the opportunity to add a solid top-4 defenseman, some depth pieces, and maybe even a 1st round pick. A trade like that could really put the Leafs in a more balanced situation.
Here’s a novel idea before players like Marner command more win something in April and May, and Play like you want to win something instead of running scared. These guys are spoiled rich kids and don’t truly care and aren’t willing to do what’s necessary for a Stanley Cup. Prove me wrong.
If Nylander wants more than 10 million let him walk. Use the money elsewhere. I'm sick of all the speculations just do something already.
