Today we’re revisiting an idea that Ansar Khan brought up from 2018, on how the St. Louis Blues supposedly made a trade offer to the Detroit Red Wings. Oddly enough, this NHL trade proposal is quite similar to some of the hypothetical discussions we’ve been having recently as to who the Red Wings should potentially trade for; as the Blues’ offer from 2018 reportedly included Jake Allen in exchange for Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard.

Jake Allen, who has one year left, is coming off of an incredible season as the St. Louis Blues backup goalie behind Jordan Binnington, and Jimmy Howard is expiring this offseason, coming off of a horrible statistical performance as the Red Wings goalie.

This kind of trade probably would’ve had huge implications on the current scenario of the St. Louis Blues, as they may not be in the same position currently in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They may even be in a play-in series!

The 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs will involve eight already-confirmed teams, which are the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, and Philadelphia Flyers in the East, and the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights, and Dallas Stars in the West. The remaining teams will fight in qualifying play-in series. The matchups will be the Chicago Blackhawks against the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames against the Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes against the Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks against the Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins against the Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes against the New York Rangers, and the Florida Panthers against the New York Islanders.

As for Detroit, who knows what having a better goalie would’ve done for their own draft lottery odds and rank.

The current NHL rankings for the 2020 NHL Draft go as follows:

1st) Undetermined team
2nd) Los Angeles Kings
3rd) Ottawa Senators (via San Jose Sharks)
4th) Detroit Red Wings
5th) Ottawa Senators
6th) Anaheim Ducks
7th) New Jersey Devils
8th) Buffalo Sabres.

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

The former NHL Draft Lottery odds, went in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

  1. If that trade had happened then it would have been a win for the Wings. I can only assume that Kenny blocked it because he had no idea that Jimmy would have fallen off the cliff as badly as he has. Would we have been a better team? Yes, but only marginally better because the defence still sucks…..

  2. Watching the games, what was astonishing, was that Howard wasn’t that bad in net. He actually played well, but did have some bad games. Most of those loses were not on him. He even had a 45ish save game, that the Wings lost. The team was just not playing well. It was just one of those seasons for Howard. Felt bad for him.

  3. No point in doing that for the Red Wings, they can pursue a goalie this offseason and Allen would’ve done poorly anyway with their defense.

  4. If the trade went through, Howard would have the good numbers, and Allen would've had the poor numbers.
The defensive play is very different, between Detroit and St. Louis.

  5. This analysis is very flawed. A person would bring in Jimmy Howard for a Stanley cup run. Which the Blues felt they were a contender the whole year. Howard would be brought in as a person to step up if Billington falls. At age 35 vs 28, Howard is not viewed as any long term solution just a person with experience, including playoffs. A mentor for young Billington. Jake Allan would have been a better starter than Bernier, but not a player to get the Wings to the cup. So that was the Wings interest a younger goalie that will allow them to buy time for when they are ready to make a run. So it would not have been a horrible trade for either team. The long term play does not matter. Blues won the cup with Allen as a backup, but it should not be viewed as a rip off because Blues have a backup goalie that is putting up much better stats. It can be said that the Wings are better off since now the get the third overall pick, vs picking later in the draft. Trades must not be viewed 10 yrs later, but what they are supposed to produce at the time. Stanley Cup winning GMs understand this.

  6. Getting a bag of pucks for Howard would have been better than watching him in net so this isn't bad for the wings at all….just because they traded for him doesn't mean he would have played more than a few games

  7. Howard has been carrying the red wings for years. Nobody understands that the defense has been this bad for a while.

  8. I say detroit drafts Askarov and dips into the free agency a bit but focus on a longer term rebuild

  9. Are you ever going to make a 10 minute video that doesn't ramble on about 1 topic just to make the 10 minute monetary guideline?
At least stop cock teasing your viewers with ten different 10 minute videos, when you can fit the entirety of the content the videos talk about in around 10-20 minutes videos.
Big reason I am refusing to subscribe or reacting(oppose commenting)

  10. So Ken Holland makes moves in the teens to keep the Wings in the playoffs and he's an idiot for not letting the team sink. He then doesn't make a trade to make the team better, continuing the sink, and he's still an idiot. Hmmm.

  11. Jimmy Howard for Martin Jones straight up. I know Howard is going to be a free agent, but SJ doesn’t look like they Jones any longer either
