GAME RECAP: Penguins vs. Hurricanes (12.21.23) | Captain Clutch

For the last home game before the holiday break, the Pittsburgh Penguins matched up against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes have won the last five match-ups between these two clubs. Looking to change that, the Penguins took the lead first. Rickard Rakell threw a puck on net, where Sidney Crosby was waiting to tip the puck in. The Penguins held the momentum into the first intermission. Carolina picked up some momentum of their own heading into the 2nd period, and eventually got their own goal. The Hurricanes’ Teuvo Teravainen evened the score late in the 2nd. With a tie game to start the final 20 minutes, the intensity picked up. Plenty of odd man rushes and grade-A chances were everywhere, but none of them were able to find the back of the net. For the 6th time this season, the Penguins went into overtime. Pittsburgh received a power play opportunity with a minute left in the extra frame. They fired shot after shot, but still could not get the puck over the goal line. For the third time this season, the Penguins decided the winner in a shootout. Crosby got the lone goal of the shootout, going bar down. Alex Nedeljkovic stood tall, not letting any of the shootout attempts past him, and stopped 24 of 25 shots. The Penguins won 2-1.

  1. Good for Cap., and good to see Rakell making the most of it while Rust heals up. Some PPGs and shootout goals lately- it really is Christmas.

  2. I totally missed this game and I regret it. Good on Ned getting the win in spectacular fashion, Sid sealed the deal but from these highlights I'd say this was just a great show from the bottom 6.
