Nashville Predators Defenseman Roman Josi Catches Puck With Glove and Throws It… Which Is Illegal

December 23, 2023: Nashville Predators defenseman Roman Josi made an incredible play to keep the puck out of the net against the Dallas Stars. While he got away with it, what Josi did is against the rules.

Specifically, rule 67.4.

  1. This was called in Boston vs Winnipeg game as a penalty shot the day after. Rulebook stats a puck gloved/covered in the crease is an automatic penalty shot and possibly goal. This play happened in the crease doesn't state if it had to be on ice level or not

  2. It's a penalty to catch and throw the puck, period. Whether it is a penalty shot or not, I don't feel like reading the rule book to find out. It's legal to bat pucks with your hands, but you cannot catch them and throw them (they kinda ignore the player who catches a puck and places it at his feet all the time, soo….)
