Hi friends,
Long time lurker, first time starting a thread.
Lived in Calgary for 15 years, but have always been a Devs fan.

I put [this trade](https://www.capfriendly.com/trade-machine/29906) together between the Flames and the Devils.

To New Jersey:
G Jacob Markstrom (15% retained)
D Noah Hanafin

To Calgary
D Brendan Smith (cap dump)
D Seamus Casey (or Lenni Hameenaho)
2025 2nd round pick (if Calgary retains 50% on Markstrom this becomes a 2024 1st round pick)

Who says no and why?

It’s hard to know how high Hanifin’s value is right now, but this does feel close to a price the Devils would pay. I’d say it’s maybe *slightly* high considering a couple of points:
1. Casey’s value seems to have really taken off. It’s unclear how much the Devils truly value him internally, but I expect they’re very pleased with his development.
2. Markstrom has been underwhleming and has a decent chunk of contract left (2 more years after this one with a $6 mil cap hit).
There is an argument that Markstrom is also kind of a salary dump on Calgary’s part, but he’s a goalie and he’s been decent enough this year. I would say the pick may end up lower than a 2nd if Casey is involved.
Obviously I really don’t know anything, but that’s my take based on just rudimentary Googling lol
I don’t think the Devils would give up Casey that easily as their window is just opening and he is a guy that can contribute to a cup-caliber team on an ELC deal. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to see him as a Nemec/L. Hughes caliber prospect at this point. Also, Markstrom (33 y/o) has 3 yrs left @ $6M for a guy who has been on the downslope the last couple years.
On the other end, I don’t think the Flames give up Markstrom and Hanafin for Smith, a mid-to-high 2nd rd pick and Hameenaho (who’s not nearly the same caliber prospect as Casey at this point in time). That seems like too good of a trade for the Devils.
I don’t see giving up Casey, potentially Hameenaho.
