The Michigan DOESN’T Belong In The NHL

Last night both Connor Bedard and Trevor Zegras scored Michigan’s on the same night. This is the first time this has ever happened in NHL History. But after last night I saw a lot of comments discussing the Michigan and there were so many people who were against this lacrosse styled goal. So today let’s talk Michigan’s and why they are GOOD for the NHL. Subscribe to Jimmy Hockey for more NHL News and Breakdowns.

  1. Zegras’s was smoother in pace like that. I think it’s a fine way to score, but when they start using the spin twirls on shoot outs I think there will be some rule changes.

  2. It has literally only happened … what – like 8 times??? HOW is that a problem? It shows insanely good stick and puck skills – and is not something EVERY player can do. I agree with your points 100% – no reason at ALL to hate it. I think most of the people hatting on it probably could not even manage to successfully score in that fashion anyhow… I love it! And I think the speed that Zegras completed his goal makes his goal better – but everyone is all over the rookie… so not many will agree with me – probably.

  3. I think at first it was impressive but now literally just had a kid in Peewee get 2 in 1 game so its just one of those things that see to be abit too much but same time i feel if a team gives u the space then its there job to stop you but idk tough call🤷‍♂️

  4. Doesn't feel like a "team" sport goal. If hockey is the ultimate team sport this is the ultimate non-team goal.
Counterpoint would be that semi Michigan when zegras flipped it over the net and his teammate batted it in.
Yes its fancy, flashy and cool requires incredible skill and all that but…

  5. I think once too many players start doing it and scoring then the NHL will put a stop to it. They'll also put a stop to it or put restrictions/rules on it if players just start skating around with the puch on their sticks. It's still so rare that i think it's fine

  6. imo this video is here just as a filler to ride the hype wave and im not mad about that
but i clicked , watched, and commented, so thats the name of the game
anyways on to complain about the next random video i watch while i play runescape on the side

  7. I'm personally not a fan of this, but as long as it remains within the rules (i.e high sticking, stick doesn't slash goalie arm/glove prior to puck in the net, etc), it should be allowed. Things like this are what innovate the game, and removing things like this will deter player creativity, and take away some of the excitement of seeing what happens next. Besides, just knock his stick away before he gets the chance! (much easier said than done, lol). I can't wait for the lacrosse pass!! lol

  8. Im still on the fence about it. Amazing skill to be able to do it but what is the defender supposed to do to defend it? Take a swipe at the puck at 4ft high with a stick? You could see the Blues defender seem to go that route but hold back.

  9. Garbage goal that only happens in soft leagues. NCAA, and modern NHL. Disney on Ice is boring.

  10. Is the puck in the net? Then it's a goal, stfu.

Also why isn't that player uncovered? If you let the player dick around uncontested then that's on you.

  11. Same as the spin o rama in the shootout, goalies can't really stop it other than with luck or the attacking players fails the move… personally i think it should be a refused goal by default but i can recognise the amount of skills it take to pull it off

  12. The Michigan is definitely a great goal to have in the NHL. Forces goalies to adapt. You see a lot of goalies just go post-to-post covering the bottom of the net, but now they need to think about the top shelves.

  13. It really does demonstrate an amazing level of skill. It would be cool to see it more often. Also it would be fine with me if the high stick rule above the cross bar was abolished.

  14. people complaining about the michigan or other 'trick' shots, are a clownish real life recreation of Will Ferrels "Semi Pro" when the ref blows up and tries to disallow the alley oop. But it isn't without prior form – "ice hockey hates innovation" – not all, but a lot of hockey people do. Look at the NHL making rule chanegs to disallow someone screening the goalie by facing them, because I guess "real men" do it with their back to the tender.

  15. I like the Michigan, but when the stick comes above the crossbar it's gotta get called high-sticking. And that's where we have the entertainment product vs sport. Too often NHL alters rules to improve the "entertainment" aspect and safety goes by the wayside.
Racing for those icings… so exciting to see that guy clutching his destroyed ankle/knee on a failed chase.

  16. As an ex goalie. I don't rly like it half the time. From looking at the highlights, over half the goalies are getting hit in the Cage of their mask with the stick. That's a penalty. The goals are great. But Maybe they need to name a rule about having the Puck attached to your stick in the crease.

  17. This play is hard enough to pull off under ideal circumstances, let alone NHL play. Even if this becomes way, way more common, well, that just means defense has to adjust. That's hockey evolution in action, and that's what keeps it exciting.

  18. I like the new quick hands of the NHL, miss the physical side of the game though that's what really made it cool for me

  19. IDC who you are this is not lacrosse. This is not an NHL shot and it doesn't belong in the NHL .. go play lacrosse or go watch lacrosse but like I say IDC who you are .. it doesn't belong in the NHL

  20. In my opinion, it’s a fair shot, but if you hit the goalie’s head with your stick above the crossbar (ie mess it up, or a higher part of your stick contacts their helmet) then thats also high sticking. Go for it, but be careful.

  21. Instead of hating on something, learn how to do it yourself and implement it, like everything else in life. If you want something go after it. This also applies if you're a defenceman like me. If you want to defeat this tactic, learn how to defeat it through practice and then implement it on the ice (e.g., hit the puck off the stick of the "offending" player). As you say, it's not a common move (although, maybe in the "Age of Bedard" it may become one!). On the flip side, I would like to know how many times it's been attempted but failed miserably. Then we can make a judgment call on it. But really, if someone has been practising for hours to pull this trick off, then by all means allow him their time in the spotlight.
