Jeff Paterson on Flyers shutting down Canucks, PP production, Demko & DeSmith, top-6 winger for EP40

Jeff Paterson recaps the Flyers’ 4-1 win over the Canucks on Thursday. JPat wonders if we’ll see a mini training camp with all this practice time ahead, what to make of the Canucks’ power play of late, Casey DeSmith getting starts over Thatcher Demko right now, Nikita Zadorov’s play and if it’s time to pull the trigger on acquiring a top-6 winger for Elias Pettersson to play with.

  1. Canucks bottom six have been carrying the top six for a while now. Someone should tell Petty all 82 games count. Mikheyev can't even score when the goalie is looking the other way. what is up with him? One of our $5 mil wingers needs to go and Garland should not be one of them.

  2. This is my line-up going forward:

    9 – 40 – 6
    65 – 24 – 96
    81 – 53 – 8
    21/34 – 88 – 18

Suter has the offensive chops and defensive skills to be a solid 2C (for now). BUT, why weigh Petey down with two underperforming wingers?

  3. The Canucks looked like how I used to look as a competitive swimmer after the holidays – like I'd had too much turkey and sweets and needed a week to get back into the swing of things. Obviously, I wasn't making 6 and 7 figures to swim and didn't have people investing financially in my success – oh, and it was just practice and not an actual competition. Normally, that would be excusable, but since the Flyers didn't seem to have the same turkey rust, it's not a valid excuse. It's only one game and even good teams have bad teams that they struggle against because they're just a bad matchup, but ask me again in a month and we'll see where they're at. I've been cautiously optimistic the whole way along, so if they suddenly fall apart in February, I won't be surprised.

  4. Hey JP, the Canucks aren't totally healthy. It's really too bad for Breezer that his chance at the NHL is ruined by concussion.

  5. The top two lines need a shakeup if they can't get their act together sometime in the next couple of games. I had/have pretty low expectations of the Philly and Ottawa games, because the Canucks always seem to have more holiday rust than other teams.

  6. PP sucks when Petterson try to be cute and passes all the time. It is time he utilizes his rocket of a shot instead of shooting off blanks all the time.

  7. There has been something off about EP40 this year. He started well, but he seems more interested in passing and hitting players, than actually shooting. And he goes through games where he's falling down all the time, like he's a newborn deer. I'm not sure what he's up to. It's almost like he's trying to tank to lower his future salary. The Team seemed totally disconnected this game, like they were a second or two behind the play, or behind a pass, or just not really tuned in to each other. The top six seem to not be moving like they used to, and just waiting for a perfect shot to present itself. I hope they have a practice or two to sort things out.

  8. Tooooo much turkeyyyyyyy was the isssue lol but tbh that Powerplay need so much work its dogwater like they cant enter the zone they camt setup if they do setup they wait for the perfect pass but i feel like philly has a big enough defence to shut us down they got like 4 guys 6,4 back there insane and we just cant beat Philly for some reason good learning game how to play when theres no time and space
