I HATED the Sandin Trade! Now What Do I think?

Will getting Easton Cowan be worth trading Sandin?!

What are your thoughts on the Sandin trade now that some time has passed?

  1. It's all gonna come down to Cowen for me. I agree that I hated them trading away Sandin but if Cowen's camp wasn't a fluke then I'll feel much better about it.
Also don't forget that last year Robertson utterly dominated camp and still got sent down, and when he did get called up he spent most of his time burried in the bottom of the lineup. The Leafs are just weird when it comes to young players who aren't no-brainers like Marner, Matthews and Nylander.

  2. Rasmus Sandin totally won me over during the Stars game last december when he, Liljegren and Marner killed a 5v3 like their lives depended on it. What a lad, I hope he reaches his full potential and gets to enjoy a long, successful career!

  3. Bruins fan here, nice video. Always like to see more hockey content. I too thought the leafs trading Sandin was not a great move at the time, as I think the guy's pretty underrated.

  5. i liked Sandin but like @jlove8445 stated, I would like to see some Leafs dmen who can shut down scoring chances in our one. When things got more intense, I agree with @magnacircenses and Sandin was getting run over and couldn't compete physically. I realize you cite his age but I don't fully agree with you as he was tunring 23 at the time. He also had shades of Dermott when he would try to do too much and mess up the play which usually put the Leafs in a bad scoring chance against. Like @ericchilton6863 stated, Sandin was a defensive liability at the worse possible times.

So, I did like him but I didn't see he had the incredible skill in him to make it as a game changer and didn't see the physical attributes to make him effective in playoff hockey

I didn't mind the trade when it happened as McCabe was kind of a bigger version of Sandin and we were able to get a 1st round pick, albeit low, for him. Cowan is a great draft choice on top if it.

  6. I think the video was great. The only thing you probably should have touched on isn't just how good the player is but also the psychological aspect of it.

Yes, everyone likes sandin, but has anyone stopped to think what sandin likes?

Sandin was the player who held out on his contract, thinking he was better than he's actually proven. Part of why he held out on signing was that he was not happy with his ice time.

The question now becomes, do you keep this guy? Or is his discontent within the locker room enough to see him shipped out? I think we all got our answer, and it's pretty likely it was the correct one.

Even without selecting cowan l, the leafs were able to parlay sandin into a reset plus getting gustafson, (pretty sure sandin was a late first rounder).

The proof in how content sandin was could also be found in how gustafson left toronto. Gustafson could have renewed his contract, and get a raise, but he signed with new york for the same amount of money. That to me signifies it wasn't about the money but the playing time.

All this to say, sandin wasn't happy here and wanted out. The proof of that could also be found in how gustafson left toronto as well. It's best to cut ties with discontent in a locker room, regardless of the talent level.

  7. At the time I didn't like the trade. After this season's training camp, I revised that and I'm happy with the deal. But, defenders take longer to mature, and Sandin is only 23. And, bars are filled with Easton Cowans who never quite caught on in the big leagues no matter how big the promise looked at first. We'll have a clearer picture of this trade in 4 years. For now, a hopeful, if tentative thumbs up.
