[Alter] Sheldon Keefe says there is going to be “less tolerance” for defensive mistakes going forward and cites David Kampf as a scratch as an example of that tonight. Pontus Holmberg will draw in.

Unless I see a member of the core 4 scratched for a costly mistake I ain’t buying it.

  2. OhGodThisGuy

Gotta say, that’s the absolute LAST person i thought Keefe would ever scratch.

  3. Soggy_Specific4093

I’m all for benching players but if Keefe’s only starting this now this many years into the job it needs to apply to everyone not just your depth players. If the stars play bad it needs to apply to them too. Doesn’t even have to be a healthy scratch just make them miss some shifts to hold them accountable.

  4. Actual_Cobbler_6334

About time these guys started being held accountable.

Also lol @ Treliving giving Kampf, Klingberg, and Reaves a combined $7.85M 😐

  5. internetman666

Signing Kampf for over 2 mill was a big mistake

Edit: Just looked up its for 4 years. What were they thinking

  6. He was probably going to sit him anyways to rest, we have the cap space

  7. Mattewsmustache34

Should have probably started with willy and Riley for the overtime

I don’t really think of Kampf when I think of defensive mistakes. Perhaps he’s taking the fall this time in order to send a message to the locker room. I’m normally very supportive of our goalies (or any goalies in general) because of the pressure they play under and the level of scrutiny for Toronto goal tenders is off the charts. But I’m also not blind. Our loss last night was not because of bad defence. It was bad goal tending plain and simple. I understand that the team feels like they need to play better in front of Samsonov but I don’t know how you can ask for much more than 5 goals for and only 20 shots on net

  9. Keefe has never been scared of flexing his muscle against depth guys. Wake me up when he shows accountability with Marner.

  10. SpicyP43905

Ok, I am genuinely scared of Keefe now.

    Man, that’s cold asf

  11. spentchicken

Keefe should bench himself for allowing this group to year after year never start on time and never figure out how to play against an aggressive forcheck team.

  12. Sideshift1427

Can’t realistically bench Jake McCabe, I guess.

  13. DrSeuss19

He can do whatever he wants. If the goalie doesn’t stop the fuckin puck it won’t matter and you can’t have Matthews scoring like 30% of the team’s goals.

  14. Iliketothrowaway2456

Id actually respect him if he would bench one of the big 4 (ahem Tavares) for defensive lapses.

This all seems like “the media is on me again, better say/do things to try to protect myself from ridicule”.

  15. LowHangingLight

Kampf is an odd choice, but he also looked useless last night. There was a play where Gregor rushed the net and almost scored. Then he saucered the puck right through the crease. Kampf was RIGHT THERE and did nothing. No attempt to swat the puck down whatsoever, with his stick or glove, etc.

He’s a good defensive player, but he doesn’t really add anything to this group.

I’m happy. I don’t care how it starts as long as it does start. And you always have to start at the bottom of the lineup when you do this. But you can’t pussy out like Keefe usually does when it comes to everybody else on the roster especially the top 2 D/F lines. An entire team will only take on full accountability if the punishments are fair, mistakes are correctly identified, and everyone is accountable.

    > Two bad 5 game stretches between now and the end of season and we could be in a very, very bad spot in the last few games. Can’t keep starting a goalie the team clearly doesn’t believe in anymore. The Leafs are not entitled to the playoffs and we need to rack up as many wins as possible.

    > The biggest problem with the Leafs is they don’t hold themselves accountable for shit play. They just keep rewarding the players with unjustified ice time and games played.

    > Brodie, Timmins, and Samsonov should all be scratched next game. Then move up the chain and do it to everyone else. We have no culture of accountability.

And there will inevitably be player/fan backlash from this. One flashpoint with the fans will be Willy and Marner. Marner has always been and will always be a better defensive hockey player than Willy. But there’s a weird blindspot with the fanbase that rabidly attacks Mitch and defends Willy to their last breath.

But this is necessary. And Tre, if Keefe chickens out when it comes to the big guys, I want Keefe’s head on a metaphorical pike.

  17. Woullie_26

Am I tripping or does this means Sammy might get more games

  18. IAmTheBredman

Kampf is the fall guy here. Keefe isn’t going to scratch one of the big 5, and if he scratches anyone else it’s either going to be someone not relevant enough to send a message, or it’s a guy like domi/bert where the reaction will be “yea, but you knew he wasn’t a good defensive player going in”. Kampf is the right combination of someone who is well liked/respected in the locker room so it actually sends a message, but also isn’t going to cripple the team by having him out for a game.

  19. TheGapInTysonsTeeth

Only took 5 fucking years, but we are actually going to get some accountability now? Thank goodness

  20. Woullie_26

Kampf is like the last person I expected getting benched for defensive issues

  21. charliem11

Really??? Nylander goes -5 in the last two games and Keefe drops the hammer on a Kampf???

  22. BackTo1975

    Lol Someone feeling the heat?

And get back to me when you sit someone big for a screwup. Sitting Kampf is one thing, sitting Nylander or another of the four is something else.

  23. Sheldon sure isn’t scared to make those big descsions.

  24. FujiPhoto

    He made a noticeable mistake that led to fantillis game tying goal;

I’m a Kampf truther…he’s a gamer in the playoffs (Playoff Kampf) but I’ll give Keefe his due here for providing some accountability

  25. rampas_inhumanas

Accountability, but only if you’re not Marner.

  26. _King_pin_

Nylander is gonna be out the rest of the year. :/

  27. Zealousideal-Swing39

Sooooo that means they won’t play Samsonov anymore right?

    RIGHT?!?!??

  28. Carparker19

This along with calling out poor goaltending… what is happening? Is Keefe on the hot seat? Does he finally feel free to do this now that he’s no longer friends with his GM? Is he passively challenging Tre’s bad offseason moves and asking for roster help?

  29. I call BS. I’ll believe it when he benches Mathews or Marner. Easy to say when you bench a 4th liner

  30. Yep, way to flex the coaching muscle Sheldon… scratching the 4th line center should really shake things up with that core of spoiled brats!

  31. Yeah I’ll take Keefe seriously when he holds more than ‘Kampf’ accountable. Eg. When does Brodie get held accountable?
