NJ Devils Send Akira Schmid To Utica Comets AHL

The New Jersey Devils called Nico Daws up from Utica on 12/27

The next day the Devils sent Akira Schnid down to Utica…

What does this mean for Schmid?

What does this mean for Daws?

I talk about the Devils’ goaltending woes in this video.

  1. Honestly I think this could go two ways, Akira got better after being called up from utica last season, and I haven't seen Daws in a minute so either he does really bad or decently good. Im interested to see if/when Akria comes back

  2. It blows me away that you keep saying Schmid never got a "real" chance. What more do you need to see? You seem to want the Devils to give him playing time so he can prove that he deserves it, but that's doing things backwards and it's just not how it works. You have to PERFORM to EARN playing time (not the other way around). Schmid has not proven that he deserves more starts. The Devils did the right thing here. Let the kid go down and reset…he'll get plenty of playing time now. And if he continues to underperform, it won't cost the Devils games.

  3. Agree on mgmt of Akira. He looked serviceable at times but never got a chance to be an actual starter. Ppl seem to forget how good Akira is in relief. He's got potential and ever since lindy fucked him for starting 2 nights in a row after 40+ saves, theyve unfairly lost all faith.

  4. I agree schmid never got rlly good attempts consistently and personally think he’s way better then VV. he saved us play offs later year and VV sucked against the canes too only reason we did win that one game like you said cause we scored 8 goals he still gave up mad goals in like 5 mins

  5. So I wonder if this is a move to allow him to get consistent playing time and continue to develop. I think they do want him to be the next #1 of this team but aren't ready to commit to him yet. I'm OK with the decision if the plan is to allow him to play nightly and continue to gain experience. Time will tell as you said. It certainly didn't help that he hasn't looked overly good this year so far. Sometimes a little demotion is all the motivation one needs.

  6. Thank you Schmid for the Rags series but that was ages ago and he was trash this season. So was Vanecek but he's getting us wins unlike Schmid and is on a higher payroll. So, my boy Vitek gets the nod in net and will be getting my support despite your hate fake Devils fans. Hope Daws comes up big and if he shows what he can do I dont mind him stealing the job from my boy. Anything that gets us to the playoffs is welcome.

  7. Schmid had lots of games to prove himself and he's not ready at the NHL level right now. I don't agree to keep playing him to see if he can develop and maybe destroy the season. Gibson is not good. We have to stay with VV for now. It's Fitti's fault. Only he can fix this.

  8. i think Devils management want Vanecek to get better numbers to have a better chance of trading him in summer

  9. Got to figure out for sure what we have in Nico Daws. Understand the move. As for the Devils getting Vitek Vanecek in 2022/23 eh I never liked the move. It was desperation that drove that. Sorry but I never get hyped about getting ex-Caps goalies. Never. In regards to Akira Schmid he will always live in Devils lore or whatever. Eliminating the Rags in the playoffs is almost as good as winning the Stanley Cup. To finish I will say what I said to my son and that is until the Devils draft a bonafide starting goalie again they aren't going to win the Stanley Cup. I understand that some teams in recent times have done things differently but it is just a feeling I have. What this means is I would rather have Nico Daws or Akira Schmid start G#1 for the Devils in the NHL playoffs than Vitek Vanecek.

  10. I definitely do not think this is the last time we'll see Akira in the NHL. Like a lot have said, Akira never really got a SOLID chance at owning the net during the regular season, which is really disappointing when looking at how V has struggled. One thing he's missed out on with his tiptoed management is consistent start, which would've really helped him and possibly us here, even if we had to sacrifice a couple points. So hopefully, even if it is the AHL, he comes back warm and confident. Akira's still young, he's got time and we'll forever remember him as a playoff hero and part-owner of the Rangers.

I am excited to see how Daws performs. He better get his chance; I don't want to have to start a "Give Daws the Net" series.

  11. Another thing: two young talented goalies like we think Schmid and Daws are simply cannot stay on the team at the same time. I believe there is no argument here. Normally a team should have a well established goalie and a good backup. So either Schmid or Daws need to go ( be traded) and whoever of them stays is going to be a back-up.

  12. Daws probably gets the start tonight. Hope we get a great effort and a motivated squad infront of him. Like mentioned in the video, we gotta see what we have internally before paying through the nose for something else/deciding which 'tendy goes the other way.

Two points. 1) I don't think our window is now, I think it's primarily 2025-2030. 2) what did 2003 and 2012 have in common? Goaltending. We don't have a goalie that can steal a series like Marty did so often. If we get one, then maybe NJ can make a run. Hot goalies make or break playoff teams. LGD
