San Jose Sharks New Year’s Resolutions To Improve The Team (For The Long Run)

With the New Year here, make some New Year’s Resolutions for the San Jose Sharks to improve the team (for the long run). Start with Resolution One, playing the young guns, specifically Danil Gushchin, Thomas Bordeleau, and Shakir Mukhamadullin. With the season officially lost, the Sharks need to start getting the young players a lengthy NHL run so they can be ready to be full-time NHL players next season. For resolution number two, the Sharks need to continue to embrace the chaos this year by running the five-forward power play unit, giving guys new opportunities, and being aggressive. For Resolution Three, Mike Grier needs to be active early in the trade market to ship players out sooner rather than later. Finally, Resolution Four, finish the job and secure the best odds of winning the draft lottery and adding Macklin Celebrini to the Sharks prospect pool.

  1. I get that Grier had concerns about younger players feeling entitled to roster spots when he inherited the team. Building a roster of bonafide NHL players made sense…make the younger players earn a spot instead of forcing them onto the roster.

Buuuuuut, things were different back then. The prospect pool was dried up. Now that there’s multiple waves of prospects coming to the team, make them compete against each other for roster spots instead of warm body veterans. If Bordeleau isn’t producing, oh well…maybe Cardwell steps in and gets a shot. Next year, Bystedt and others are on the way…

Let the kids play. The veterans have had enough of a sample size for Grier to start shopping them around…
