The players are coached to hit hard and high, especially into the boards for the maximum chance for injury. No one admits to that, of course, but what other reason is there for deliberately slamming someone else's head into a basically immovable object? If you want to separate "body from puck" you can do that without slamming their head into the boards. But it doesn't look as cool.
