Dreger: Leafs need to attach a sweetener to move on from Zaitsev

Gardiner and Myers over $7m?! Has the NHL lost it's mind? You have to add a sweetner for Zaitsev. I see Zaitsev and Brown to Edmonton for a pick. Leafs get the cap dump, Oilers get Brown to play with McDavid, and a dman they need.
I love Dreger. But there's no way you're trading a number 4 RD with an acceptable term and cap and have to include a sweetener. Zaitsev will be 33 when the deal is up. That's when D are in their primes as they hit their primes later than forwards. Ask Ron Hainsey and many others, guys that aren't even Nik Lidstrom/Chara stars, who are extremely effective in their mid 30s. The trend has been to keep establishing new cap hits for x value in spite of a stagnate max cap. Myers will go for 8 and Gardiner will go for 8.5. Karlsson and Doughty, like McDavid and Matthew's for forwards, have dragged the sliding scale behind them. That being said, as the cap continues to rise and players expecting their AAVs to be percentages of the growing cap Zaitsevs deal will be really good by the time its done and good in a couple of years. No way you trade Zaitsev unless you get a similar player, slightly worse. Like a Z for Benning straight hockey trade
And when they do you guys will criticize them, even if it is a good trade…. You don't even frame the argument properly by bringing up his point production.. helllllooooo he is a defender, whats his +/-, whats his possession like, what are his breakouts like … These are what is important when it comes to defenders…

This is ridiculous. The Leafs have no leverage in a Zaitsev trade. Just because he shoots right and has “cost certainty” doesn’t add value in of itself. We’re certain he can be crap potentially for those five seasons he’s got left. The Leafs need money, he doesn’t want to be there, he’s not an effective player there; it’s an anchor for Toronto. Why would anyone help the Leafs out by simply absorbing such a risky deal? Ridiculous.
Can he be good again? Sure! But I don’t think the Leafs get out of this deal without throwing in a valuable asset (2nd/1st rounder or a high end prospect) or retaining salary.
And then you have to think of this; someone has to replace him in Toronto. He’s still playing 20 minutes a night, albeit not well. Who’s taking up that ice time? All that cap is going to be used to round out the roster with entry level contracts.
Zaitsev has a big bonus on July 1. The rumor is there is already a deal on the table but the team receiving Zaitesv wants to wait until after July 1 to save money.
Zaitsev needs to play his way out of town. The Leafs have no obligation to take a hit on his over generous contract. Let him increase his own value this coming season as a Leaf and revisit his trade request at the trade deadline. Until that time "little Nicky" needs to put his big boy pants on.

I would prefer the Canucks trade for Zaitsev instead of overpaying for a UFA dman like Myers or Gardiner.
