Devon Toews Sounds Off. Does He Have a Point? Why It’s a Good Thing

The Colorado Avalanche are usually a very vanilla team when it comes to sound bytes. Maybe Nathan MacKinnon is the only one who really wears his heart and voice on his sleeve. You wouldn’t expect Devon Toews to be a guy to call out teammates and show his frustration.

Toews didn’t do a Jerry Macguire freakout or anything like that. He was very cool and collected, but the words he used were like darts. Calling out players who “think they are playing well” and for not having the same goal. He used the word “self-awareness” multiple times.

Toews is fed up. He wants the problems corrected now. And who are we to disagree.

Will this be the turning point? Wait and see.

  1. here is to hoping that his comments will spark some sort of fire under the avs — really hoping for a different team tomorrow vs ottawa

  2. This team goes where Rantanen goes. If he starts gliding and reaching then the others do too. If he gets mad and decides to play, the team will too.

  3. 2 years ago of I saw the avs down 2 going into the third I knew they would come back and make it a game. This year I see them tied going into the 3rd, a goalie with a sub .900 save percentage, and wonder how they will manage to lose the game. I started to feel this way in the kraken series, and that vibe continues. I don't think the goaltenders are the only issue, but for me at least, they are the biggest issue

  4. Polarized talent throughout the lines yet again. Makar needs to play, Jesus. Self awareness needs leadership. Play better defense as a team and win the battles. Stop giving up shit early. Offense will come.

  5. I think the issue is leadership. They need to name an interim captain that is the man in the locker room. Bednar is a great coach but you also need a captain. Maybe it is Makar, maybe it is Toews. I don't think that Mackinnon or Rantanen has that levelheadedness to take the role. Also Toews may be talking about new guys, I am looking at Johansen and a few others. This comment was early in my watch, maybe you guys come to the same conclusion. Cheers

  6. Ive been trying to gt this point across in diff groups when they chirp on Byram , but yet hes stuck with all these guys for the most part is why hes struggling🤷‍♂️ this is just IMO and know pple may dissagree. TBO i dont think its Bo , thats just me . I really didnt exspect this from Toews but im not suprised at the same time and could be a very good move on his part . Again Bo hasnt been perfect but neither has anyone else incl Toews.

  7. I think that Toews is talking about the entire defensive core, including himself. I see too many turnovers trying to move the puck out of the zone and too many instances of the D being out of position leading to odd man rushes and leaving the goalie exposed. Missing Makar and Sammy G, who is a great puck mover, doesn't help. I think these struggles will continue until they figure it out.

  8. I think they really messed up not naming an interim captain. It goes without saying landy is the captain, however you need someone day in and day out to lead the team and be a voice. Now you have guys like cogliano and tazer making passive aggressive comments which although well intended, usually cause more division than not. They need a captain that can call out specific players, hold them accountable for mistakes, and hold them responsible for their improvement.

  9. I think Georgi played well above his standard last year, and I believe this is the more realistic side (.860ish save percentage). He’s let in 2 goals in less than 10 shots TOO many times this season

EDIT: Also how many times are we going to say “oh is this going to be the turning point now” 🤣

  10. I like what Toews said and I like that it came from him. Only a few guys could get away with saying it and I think if it came from Mack everyone would just be saying he's gotta relax or whatever. If were speculating on who he's talking about I don't think it would be a guy like Malinski but it's likely the more established guys like colton, johanson, wood and I kind of think he could be throwing some shade at manson.

  11. I can't watch the games so I don't how Toews is playing. According to DNVR he was awful last game. I'm of the mind if you're playing bad you're in no position to criticize. I'm also of the mind that publicly excoriating your teammates in front of the media has zero net benefit. Quite the contrary actually.

  12. I might have to listen to Toews again but when i heard him mention 6, i thought he might be saying that the entire defensive team aren't contributing.

  13. Toews is right! They stink and the worst, they lack professionalism! Nothing has changed since November 4! Nothing!!!!

  14. I think what it was is that Toews is part of this leadership core, for players not playing in the system, by not making the simple play when needed, instead of doing an extra move or a pass, especially in defensive zone. And covering up defensively when certain defense is breaking out cause of an opening. I found defensive coverage a little choppy at times this season. I'm not sure if forwards think they're a part of the breakout or not when they should be. There's only 3 defenseman that are trusted in breakouts, well maybe 5, when they're healthy, and when the other 2 or 3 tries to do it, when they shouldn't, the play is going back the other way or it extended pressure when should be a simple clear

  15. I love the Avs and have since 1996 but I'll believe the team is back when i see it. I know they can do it but i have my doubts and going into every game i don't feel confident in them. I want to and hope they ALL get it together because they all have had terrible runs of play so far this year. Some more than others.

  16. Ryan Johansson is a bust. Colton and Wood were great additions. Jury is out on Kiviranta. Byrum is making some big mistakes. Jones and Malinski are works in progress. I think the debate can be over about Sammy G. He's a huge asset and we miss his solid defensive play.

  17. At this point I have zero expectations or assumptions until they can string together more than just a handful of wins consecutively and actually start looking like a cohesive unit. Until that happens I'm just an observer. As far as Georgie, he's giving me PTSD that reminds me of varlamov.
