In 2005-2006, the Hurricanes had an unexpectedly dominant regular season and ended up adding Doug Weight and Mark Recchi at the deadline.
The Canes went on to win the cup.
Jim Rutherford was Carolina’s GM, makes you wonder how that experience shapes his view of the Canucks

-taken from Satiar Shah on X, If the Canucks are still at the top of the standings could we see JR doing this with the Canucks?

I’m pretty open to the idea. I have typically been a “draft and develop” guy and thus wanted the the Canucks to hang on to as many prospects and draft picks as possible. However, looking at the cap picture with Petey and Hronek needing raises, the OEL buyout increasing, and all of the depth UFAs that we will have to pay more or replace, Miller getting older, etc. I would be interested in a rental this year – this really might be our best shot at a cup. I am confident that management can identify a player(s) who are a good fit and can potentially be retained for more than just this season. Never thought I’d say this but here we are!

I think the problem kind of boils down to… *who*?

Guentzel.. sure? But it’s a really thin rental/potential rental class this year.

So can you do something that is a bit money in/money out for a guy with term?

    Kuzmenko + 2023 1st + Podkolzin for Buchnevich?

Well first of all Ruterford isnt the GM

also we don’t have a lot of cap room so it’d be quite the dance to shed cap to take on pure 1 year rentals since yknow that fuckin OEL buyout is about to take a big shit on our cap space

I don’t know guys, Doug Weight and Mark Recchi are pretty old now

Jokes aside, I see a lot of “Jake Guentzel” talk, but he’s not anything like those two. Doug and Mark were gritty, resilient and made for the playoffs.

If we add, I’d like us to add skill but bias on grit and physicality.

  6. I’m totally fine with buying but we should only be buying if players go on the table at the right price. I would prefer not to ship off 1sts and 2nds as I have faith in management to draft high potential players with those picks. That’s kinda what we need if we want to maintain ourselves as a competitive team. I don’t wanna see those basement Era teams anymore like we did throughout nearly the entirety of the 2010s.

  7. CtrlShiftAltDel

We’re about half way through the season and the Canucks are in a 3-way tie for 2nd place in the entire league.

I’m all for buying and pushing this team as far as it can go because this is no longer a hot streak and more representative of the actual quality of hockey this team is playing.

  8. I mean, the Canes did go to the Stanley Cup finals three seasons prior, so their front office probably believed they could do it again.

  9. I also think if Roloson doesn’t get hurt – Oilers win

  10. bitter-pickles

One nice thing is that Soucy essentially counts as an add in the back end, so if we did make a move for a gritty top 9 (able to pop into top 6) guy I would not be opposed at all. Windows are shorter than ever in the NHL.

  11. SynapticTraffic

So who are the Weight and Recchi comparables to target this season?

  12. Sad_Opinion_874

They just need to bring in Mark Recchi as an assistant coach to complete the trifecta.

  13. brandedwaffle

I think this is the best chance at contending they have. They should take advantage of it. Itll only get harder as the big contracts extensions come up. That OEL cap hit doesnt help either. Gotta do something while JT is in his prime

  14. bwoah07_gp2

Gino Reda and another TSN guy briefly mentioned the Canucks may continue to be active in trade talks. And sure, why not?

  15. drainthoughts

Would love Tom Wilson but he’s too expensive

  16. PieRat351

I think it’s something we have to strongly consider. Miller is in his prime and Petey/Demko/Hughes are all starting theirs. OEL’s buyout is low hit is low this year before it starts ramping up. This might be one of the better opportunities this core has to go on a run.

  17. smcfarlane

    Wish list…

    1) a player like Reilly Smith without the 5 million tag and additional year

    2) a shutdown, historically durable, top 4 dman

    3) another depth centre

  18. Embarrassed_Weird600

What’s burrows up to these days;)

  19. TopTierTuna

It’s a little premature I think. It’s our breakout year and we haven’t faired that well against top teams. Obviously the Canucks are fantastic so far, but starting the sale of assets and picks for the short term? I’m hoping if we do that it’s modest. If Kuzmenko comes back into the good books, I’m not sure what position we try to sign for. Juulsen’s already maxing out our depth at D and he’s playing great. Does Suter or Di Guiseppe really need to be turned into someone better? I don’t know.

With Lekkerimaki and Brewster crushing it right now, I’d rather see them play the longer game.

The Canucks also have a tough road to the cup come playoff time to slug it out with contender after contender. You’ve got LA and Vegas for the Pacific division, one of Colorado, Dallas or Winnipeg for the Conference, then whoever wins the East.

Talking about playoff matchups instead of “who’s the #1 draft pick?” for the Canucks is a welcome change for once though

  21. nihilism_ftw

I wonder if David Perron would be a good, relatively cheap target

  22. theEMPTYlife

I can’t believe I’m saying it… but moving our first for the right package ain’t looking too bad 😅

The cupboards aren’t exactly fully stocked, but Lek, D-Petey, Hunter, etc. have restocked the pipeline at least somewhat and I’m feeling it Mr. Krabs, the boys deserve a little reward aka a decent pickup for a playoff push

  23. disco_enjoyer

it would not surprise me. Rutherford loves trading and it was a big contributing factor to all 3 of his cups, especially in the last 2. he made a pretty crazy amount of trades to rebuild that Penguins roster and almost all of the acquired players had very high impact even if the trades looked so-and-so at the time.

  24. mediumyeet

I feel like Zucker could be a reasonable option. Expiring contract with 50% retained would be a 2.65mil cap hit. Not sure exactly how the cap would work but might be something there. Another option would be Perron with 50% retained which would be 2.375mil cap hit.

Neither guy would break the bank in terms of assets we have to give up.

My ideal deadline would be something like:

    – Kuzmenko + Brustewicz + 2024 1st for Guentzal (2mil retained)

    AND

    – Woo (or another prospect) + 4th for Zucker (50% retained)

The cap would work in that scenario and then we effectively replace Kuz with Guentzal on Peteys line and slot Zucker in with Miller and Boeser.

On Canucks radio this week they’ve been taking about the 06 Canes a lot, as an example of an upstart team that came out of nowhere one season to win the cup.

I don’t really like how to closest comparable cup champ is from nearly 20 years ago.
