Montembeault Extended, Roy Should be Called-up, Anderson Trade Still Makes No Sense

Montreal Canadiens sign goaltender Samuel Montembeault to three year contract extension.
With Alex Newhook hurt, Canadiens need to call up Joshua Roy.
Trading Josh Anderson makes no sense for the Montreal Canadiens right now.

  1. Love the length of the contract. Enough time to assess Monty long term and enough time to develop gk prospects if it doesnt work out. If Monty becomes what we hope he can be he can be extended at the end of the contract with a contract fair to both player and team

  2. I think what determined the outcome of the game last night was the 0 for 6 on the power play for the Habs. I'm happy Habs signed Monty.

  3. Yes to Joshua Roy. I wish Anderson would score……If there is a great deal, then trade him or pass him on as part of a deal. Otherwise, wait…

  4. I like the amount and term for what Monty brings, and it aligns perfectly with a potential end of rebuild unless the drafting is Oilersesque, which leaves the possibility to resign him as a #1 or 2nd or not.

I agree about calling up Roy, the Canadiens need offensive talent badly, they got a whole 2nd line injured (Dach, Newhook, RHP) you cant compensate with an other 4th liner.

Anderson is overpaid even when he is doing his usual 19 goals 30 points, obviously you won’t get any favorable return by trading him at 0 goals 2 passes in 20 something games, but unless you salary retain you free up 5.5 million for an actual move, Montreal is far from contending, isn’t maxed capped and doesn't have many forward prospect otw so they have the luxury to wait, but at some point the move has to be made.

Unless the cap raises dramatically and inflation hits like a train 5.5 million wont be worth 15-20 goals 30 points and some intangibles for a long ass time.

  5. Great deal on Monty. Roy should indeed get the callup unless they want a 4th liner then they should call up Simoneau or Stephens. If Anderson can still get a decent return we should pull the trigger 100%

  6. Nice contract (term and cap hit)…honestly kinda surprised the price was not closer to the $4mil or a minimum 4yr term, plus no restrictions??? Ex-agent Hughes I will happily admit has probably been the best Habs GM, maybe ever, with contract negotiations..very impressive! I realize Hughes never seems to be in a rush to make a trade until he gets what he wants, but I hope the 3 goalie situation will be dealt with soon. As for Anderson…I respectfully disagree w/you DD…kinda! Not the best puck distributer, and for his size, he doesn't really open up time and space for his line mates or get himself into scorer areas imo…he kinda tries to do things himself. BUT, if we cannot replace a guy like Anderson from within the organization (Luke Tuch, Florian Xhekaj???) or a younger version in return for Anderson, then I agree with you, you cannot trade him. Re: callup for the injured Newhook, I would like to see Roy remain in the AHL (still dealing with inconsistency) and call up Simoneau (small, but a constant motor, energy guy, sh!t disturber). I realize we need offence but in my mind, promote Ylonen, and place Simoneau on the 4th line. We shall see!

  7. That's 8 major injuries on the team, another 3 huge payments for nothing (alzner, petry, edmundson), only 4 more, and you have a whopping 15 bad contract situations. You'd have to believe Gallagher/Pearson/Monahan/Matheson are next, that gives you your 15. I'd say get ahead of the curve and deal out as many as possible for 1st rounders. Arizona is sitting with 10 bad contracts currently, and they're still 8 positions ahead of the habs in the standings. Yes, they have no pressure on them, which helps, but still, St. Louis has to be embarrassed that his team is doing worse than the Yotes.

  8. Stop kidding yourself. Anderson has done nothing to warrant a 5.5 million contract. Prob not 1 million at this point.

  9. Will this be a sign & trade??? I hope they keep Monty – he was claimed off waivers as a 3/4 and arrived in MTL only to meet a whole host of injured teammates… Welcome to MTL you are now the #1 goalie in the most difficult sports market on the planet. Good luck!
AND… He did well. Yes he struggled but he got back up, got back in the fight, and slowly started turning out more good showings.

I'm a big Monty fan. He's ideal for this market.

  10. Roy and Mailloux shouldn’t get called up, they need to stay there , another player who has been doing time in the habs affiliate , Gignac maybe

Anderson brings nothing , 2 assist a 5.5 for another 5 years? Not sure who would think that this guy is good for the team.

In fact , gallagher, Anderson and dvoraks contract are hurting this team and stopping them from being competitive, if there’s a gm out there dumb enough to ask about Anderson , than he should of been traded yesterday . His value is only going down

  11. Roy has been not too good lately. Went from 11 points in 4 games to 18 points in 18. This mean 7 points in his last 14 in the AHL, 1 big fat assist in his last 5. Very average…

  12. You just cant trade a guy who hasn't scored in 21 or 22 games period. His value is not worth what you would get in return. I think the habs are stuck with him till at least next season (unless another team gets desperate and over pays) when hopefully they can finally turn the tide and fight for a playoff spot cause that's when a guy like Anderson can shine.

I think the ref thought he was doing Josh a favour not calling a penalty shot and he might have been right in doing so cause if josh had missed it would have been crushing.

  13. I like it.. It's a good deal. At $3.1M, you're leaving room to sign more stars. And he's good enough to help win games. The Habs tried to win with a $10M goalie and look where it got them? And he's from Quebec. That's a big win for many.

  14. The best contract in term of cap space, length, plus the pretty rare absence of a NTC (nowadays it comes by default almost; it's "removed" as a result of specific negotiations about it; so it's not an insignificant aspect of his contract). It's all perfect if we keep him and see what we have in 2-3 years, but also perfect to be traded (and until then, if keeping the good work, be kept in the discussion every single time a team is looking for a cap friendly goalie to save their season (happens every years; it's more talked about because Oilers blabla), and it can even be a winning move before the TDL for teams with 1a/1b tandems but one is injured; it can save a post season to have AT LEAST one good goalie in the bank (us Habs learned it the hard way; plus stayed injured after that for the rest of his career (not sure Krider and Price are on speaking term still – at least the latter wacked and tripped him TFO with refs mostly looking the other way lol).

I still think we have not one, but two future #1 goalies in our system. Yes Fowler, but I guess the other ;). Where Monty will fit in at that point if not already traded, IDK, but IMHO we should do it like the Bruins a few years ago, with a 50/50 or 40/60 1b/1a tandem. PLUS good options if both taken out. No ONE by far the only #1 who's body decide the fate of each season. No thanks (but TOTALLY WORTH it if only for the team 2021's Last Hurrah up to the finals; wining against Tor in the most humiliating fashion possible, destroying Vegas shutting up everyone that said any US teams would destroy us, and finally, every second until the end of the finals, even when defeat was assured. Priceless man (other than TOTAL collapse and first rebuild in team's history…).

Will anything this season happen regarding Allen and/or Primeau if Monty isn't trade? Allen is paid more than I remembered. It's like 3,8M on the cap (i.e. approx. 4.4M in salary per year bit who cares lol). So… Ouch. And until end of next season. He's playing quite well; could we trade him if we retain something like 50% it would only be for 1.5 year MAX, and still help us with the cao). for less than 2M on the cap, and cup contender might want the goalie dept, etc. If only he wasn't known for bis high level of inconsistency….

And Primeau? Can he have a permanent role in the NHL or no? Can he get better? Any other team that might be interested to pick a cheap low risk project?
