Thought this was just a rumour but now that Friedman has reported it…apparently Michael Nylander is heavily involved in the negotiations. I hope it doesn’t go off the rails.

If they re sign Nylander for more than Marner makes it’ll be the worst contract they’ve given a member of the core 4.
I feel like I have spent the last several years being gaslight online by people who never stop talking about contract values, AAVs and cap space. How many podcasts did I listen to that were freaking out about how Tavares would decline and be an anchor the last few years of his deal? How many posts about if we really should have given Riley that deal? I’m sure that once this deal signs, whatever it is signed for a bunch of people will come out of the woodwork to say it is going to break the team in the future. I have reached the point where I simply do not care anymore, and I’m just happy I get to continue to watch Nylander.
Watching the Raptors this year has really cemented into me the fact that the Leafs are a legitimately fun team to watch and with these extensions will continue to be fun to watch for the next several years.
Always nice to include family in negotiations. /s
Why are the Leafs the only team where their Dads seem to make their contract decisions for their sons?
Like let the player and agent handle it and I guess give your two cents if you’re asked but like stop caring about you kids contract so much and let them play where and for how much they want lol.
Edit: I should add at least being publicly apart of negotiations. Obviously ask for their opinion and advice but that stuff should never become public IMO
Hopefully you all keep the same “paul” energy for Michael. Do you remember the last willy negotiations? Lmao
He hates to say it, yet he brings up Michael Nylander every time he talks about the contract and has since the previous negotiation yet has always downplayed Paul Marners role in his son’s negotiations. I’m not saying Friedman is lying but it’s clear who his source is here. I’m taking this with a grain of salt.
Micheal Nylander had a long and successful NHL career …. If I was Nylander shoes I’d be asking my dad for help/guidance as well.
As long as the guy isn’t toxic then what’s the big deal?
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being involved in negotiations.
What’s dirty is making it public and using the media.
We’ve come a long way from …. Let’s trader Nylander for Brandon Montour and Nik Ritchie
Nice to know helicopter parents exist in the NHL.
Nylander has been blowing hot and cold for a few years, but is absolutely ***on fire*** this season. He’s got something to prove, and I sincerely hope he keeps this up.
I will find it funny when people during the summer were telling me how Treliving will negotiate reasonable deals that Dubas never could if Nylander gets 11.
Nylander totally deserves 11 million (as does Marner) – but he isn’t taking a hometown discount (and no player should).
There’s no guarantee that given the extra money, it’ll be used wisely.
A few things:
First, signing for the same cap hit as Pastrnak technically isn’t the same thing as signing for the same cap percentage — but that’s mitigated by these being UFA extensions. They are going to play at the same cap hit for the next seven seasons, and it’s only in Nylander’s 35yo season that the Leafs will “benefit” from signing Nylander to the same AAV one year later under a rising cap. And it’s perfectly possible that (1) Nylander’s age curve will be steeper than Pasta, and Toronto would be better off signing him to a shorter deal; (2) that Pastrnak will re-sign for less than $11M in 8 years, neutralizing that advantage completely; and (3) that the cap *won’t* continually rise over that period. Bottom line, Boston has a better player signed to this same cap hit for the next 7 years.
It was obvious then and it’s obvious now: The Leafs should have signed Nylander in the summer, instead of squawking over price. Nylander is getting the best deal possible now, and it’s more than he would have cost in August. It has probably cost them over $1M. I guess this should officially put to bed the “Dubas got rinsed by his stars and it would never happen to a tough negotiator like Treliving” talk, right?
But Nylander is a great player and worth this money. Pastrnak, who is always going to be the big comparison here, is simply worth even more. Just because Pasta is providing ~$2M in surplus value doesn’t mean Nylander can’t provide ~$1M, for example. One contract being an A+ (for the team) doesn’t mean this is automatically an F.
Because that’s the most important part: Nylander rocks and the Leafs are better with him on the team than not on the team.
Why did Tre not sign Nylander at $10×8 in the summer and why is it not being talked about?
So now they make a teaser article. Sportsnet is getting desperate for clicks
I rarely post here but I will share my thoughts on this one, though I’m a little bit biased.
I have met Michael in Stockholm on the subway after Willys OT winner (there is also a picture of this on x – Dangle quoted it- I’m the guy next to Michael) and I could not believe how down to earth he was. I asked for a simple picture, said congrats to his son and him etc and he asked where I’m from and what do I do. I’m a color commentator here in Hungary for NHL games (also a huge Leafs fan) and he just couldn’t stop asking questions. About hockey in Hungary, the country itself, the reason I’m into hockey, we have talked at least 10 minutes and he asked way more questions than I did. Such an amazing dude really, it was the best experience for me the whole week, though I had the chance to be in the locker room after the first game, interviewed Keefe, Tavares, Knies, shook hands with Sundin, watched the games with Dangle and CJ.
Michael was special, he cared, even after everything was about his son throughout that week. We never touched the contract situation, I didnt want to bring that up. He loves hockey, he loves his son and he loves the Leafs, he played in the NHL and he knows what this is about, he is a proud father and he wants the best for his son. I cant see why this is a problem that he shares his thoughts and opinion about his sons biggest contract. He can do all he wants, they have both earned it and I’m happy for them.
Willy will sign for about 11.25M and some people will hate him and his father because he’s overpaid by around 1M. He worked for this all his life.
…and we have Ryan Reaves doing nothing for 1.3M, yet no one loses their mind.
BS for views. Friedman knows as much as we do.
IF the leafs pay Nylander 11mil+
FUCK THIS CORE (like when will they learn to sacrifice some $$ to help them get better team mates)
Nylander is having amazing year but he’s 9.5mil max
I’m glad Tavares only has one more year on his contract. There’s no way we can keep paying four players over half the cap or close to half of it and build a capable team with what’s left. I think Tavares will return but on a much more team friendly contract after 2025.
It’s kind of wild to see people that have non-stop shit on Marner for 5 years now for making $10.9M a year excited to have Nylander sign for 11-11.5M a year. Also Treliving fucked this up, he could have signed Nylander for 8 years x 10M AAV before the season started if he wasn’t trying to lowball.
This team will continue to be good but with absolutely no depth, the same way they’ve been for the past 4-5 years. When the stars get shutdown in a playoff series there will be no able to fill in for them.
Nathan MacKinnon is in the first year of a deal that pays him $12.6 AAV.
In what world is Willie worth $1.5 to $900k less than MacKinnon ?
you sign him to 8 years and just move on. Marner will walk anyways so you’ll have cap space to fuck with.
Mike Nylander has the passion i wouldnt worry too much
