I enjoyed that part of Game Over: Winnipeg that I'd gotten to watch. By the time I had wanted to comment again, the show had ended but will pick which chat comments to which to respond. To a claim by:
– Jack of the Jets' having climbed to 1st in the West, there's no doubt those Jets are ahead of all remaining East teams, too
– Mike Bartner's claim of the Jets' having leaped into 1st "in the NHL," it's been a remarkable turnaround so far this season although I plan to say more a bit later on about how by contrast the Canucks have faltered over their past few games
– Nicholas of the 1st 10 games of non-preseason play of these Jets following April had featured "roughly 60% of" said team's "goals against and regulation losses and 50% of" that team's "OT losses," the Jets' record was, on wins and OT, regulation and shootout losses had been 4-4-1-1 when compared to the (in order of furthest west to furthest east in Canada):
— Canucks' one of 7-2-1-0 -> 75 points %
— Oilers' one of 2-7-1-0 -> 25 P%
— Flames' one of 2-7-0-1 -> 25 P%
— Leafs' one of 5-3-1-1 -> 60 P%
— Sens' one of 4-6-0-0 -> 40 P%
— Habs' one of 5-3-0-2 -> 60 P%, putting the Jets 4th on P% among Canadian teams after their 1st 10 games (worse than the Canucks, Leafs or Habs but better than the Sens, Flames or Oilers)
– Jack of the 2024 USA WJC team having been "a great one," there's no doubt, and I respect that team's success as much as I'm disappointed the Canadian one didn't medal, making me look forward to the U18 women's team getting a medal (1st game to be broadcast on TSN on Saturday at 1 p.m. Central Time)
– Nicholas's of a backup in Brossoit, I've been pleasantly surprised, with questions about goaltending that perhaps aside also from the Canucks (since the acquisition of Casey DeSmith during preseason) have been swirling around Canada's NHL teams following last preseason
– Jack of the Jets' having not, following last preseason, having given up >3 goals in 27 games, that means in just ELEVEN have the Jets given up 4 or more/game, in contrast to the (also going from Western to Eastern Canada):
— Canucks, over the same # of games, having given up 4 or more goals in 12
— Flames, in 15 such games
— Oilers, in 13 of 35
— Leafs, in 16 of 36
— Sens, in 20 of 34
— Habs, in 18 of 38 (17 excluding a December shootout loss to the Pens as the Habs had only given up 3 goals over 3 regulation periods and a 5-minute OT one)
So if the Canucks are doing so well, why did the Legorocks99 YouTube man claim, via his video "This is becoming a huge problem for the Canucks…," the Canucks had had some big problems in their recent 2-1 regulation loss to the St. Louis Blues? Although he focused on that particular game, there's no doubt the Canucks, following a 5-2 win over the Preds, have gone 5 straight games where they've scored 3 or more goals or allowed <3 but not done BOTH; indeed, from 20 December Central Time onward the Canucks have played:
– 4 games during which they've allowed 3 or more goals, with a 2-1-1-0 record
– 3 during which they've allowed 4 or more, with a 1-1-1-0 record in such games
– 1 game during which they've allowed <3 which was the 2-1 loss in regulation to the Blues
So should I call the Jets Stanley Cup contenders? I'm still hesitant to do that, with limited playoff success they, following a loss of a 2018 conference final, have had, with not ONE win of a playoff game, beyond an opening-round series, following said final, and their ONLY appearance in a 2nd round during the same postseason having come during their 2021 North Division stint.
Secondly, finishing 1st in a division doesn't guarantee winning a playoff series. Although the 2021 Habs-Leafs' and 2023 Panthers-Bruins' series featured 3-1 leads by the relevant division leaders, those leaders ultimately lost 3 straight to lose their respective opening-round playoff series, the:
– 2021 postseason also featured a loss in the opening round by the Pens, the 1st-place East Division team, to the Isles
– 2023 postseason also featured a loss in the opening round by the Avs, the 1st-place Central Division team, to the Kraken
