The Boston Bruins shook off a pre- Christmas slump in a big way winning three straight to end 2023 where does that rank them in the Eastern Conference as they begin their 2024 part of the schedule let’s talk about it on a brand new episode of Locked on Boston

2-1 uh which would be a disappointing result to say the least so we’ll keep an eye on that one thank you for sticking with us over the holiday break kind of a weird schedule with having been traveling the holidays being on a weekday but we’re back here every day as the Bruins begin

The 2024 part of their schedule with a game tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets we’ll tee that one up later in the podcast but let’s talk about the last three games shall we the Bruins had lost four in a row heading into the Christmas break five of six

Overall they bounced back post Christmas with three straight wins to end 20 23 on a very high note three wins uh capped by Weekend victories over the New Jersey Devils and the Detroit Red Wings the Detroit game was a pretty hotly contested affair with a lot of pushing

Shoving um as well as scrums the whole Gambit but Boston came out Victorious and they are one of six teams that are three and 0 over uh the last week or so following Christmas including the Florida Panthers Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins in the East and we’ll touch on the East Power Rankings

Here in a minute but the Bruins uh averaging 4.67 goals in that span they scored 14 goals allowed only six in a pretty dominant victory and what’s the reason for that well quite simply their best players were their best players over the last three games David posano with two goals four

Assists over that span Charlie Coyle stepped up with three goals two assists our boy Jake debrusk is he back hopefully he’s got two goals three assists for Five Points over the last three games including a great effort to score an empty Netter in Detroit uh Charlie McAvoy five assists

Brad Marshon five assists Trent Frederick had two goals two assists for Four Points over his last three games those two goals coming against Detroit all of these players averaging more than a point per game and those are the guys that you need to get going Pasto Coyle debrusk Marshon those are

Core players for this team at the moment Frederick You could argue whether he’s a core guy but he’s certainly someone that they need to get going as kind of that secondary level of scoring uh the only kind of players who need to get going a little bit here were James Van reek only

Has one assist in that span paval zaka only one goal but otherwise a very strong effort all around Danton Heinen no point points but uh still chipping in where he can uh Georgie merkulov in his first two games averaged just under 12 minutes per game only two

Shots on goal uh we’ll see if he is a main stay on the roster here as as things continue but uh overall the Bruins led by their key key players here over the last few games and most notably I had talked before the break about how

Charlie Coyle had gone over in his last handful of games Jake debrusk had really been struggling those two guys Five Points over their last three games which is huge for this team Uh Kevin shaton Kirk chipped in a couple goals hus Lindholm with a couple assists

Uh so a lot of these guys feeling refreshed after the break which is huge for the Bruins and good on them for finishing off the year in a very strong way after things had not been looking great to end 2023 uh the Bruins again had backto backs over the weekend Trent Frederick

Called the win in Detroit a gutsy one they had a tough tough travel playing on Friday and then a five o’l game on New Year’s Eve but they came out with great energy and it was nice to pull that one off uh also in that Detroit game the

Bruins you know they had a propensity to give up some late goals with the goalie pulled but they were able to get a couple empty net goals uh JT Comer did pull it within one after de brusk had scored that empty Netter but Jim Montgomery thinks or he believes they’re

Absolutely past that uh they’re competing for each other they got energy on the bench and they’re able to get it done uh which is fantastic it was disappointing from Detroit perspective their head coach said um but the Bruins again were able to bury it and finish things off off

Which was which was really great to see Jim Montgomery still has a propensity to kind of shorten the bench which we may or may not love in the third period we’ll see if that comes back to bite them a little bit but for the time being three games three wins

Played six more games other teams below 500 right now are the Buffalo Sabres who the Bruins beat last week and the Montreal Canadians all these teams at this point would take uh quite a miracle to catch up in the Eastern Conference playoff picture the Red Wings still kicking

Around despite being beaten by the Bruins the other night they are six no sorry three points out of a playoff spot at the moment a plus four goal differential which is a lot better than some of these teams that are in playoff spots Pittsburgh has a plus4 goal

Differential they’re one point out of a wild card spot the two teams in Wild Card spots at the moment plus the two teams closest to them all negative go differentials that doesn’t bode well for their longterm um their long-term hopes the New York Islanders and the Washington Capitals currently in Wild Card spots

Islanders are a minus 9 the capital is a minus 18 the devils are right up there but they have a minus four goal differential the AA Bay Lightning are right there as well they have a minus six goal differential the lightning and the Islanders I should say are the two

Teams in those spots again all with negative goal differentials so it’s it’s pretty mid when you look at the Wild Card race in the Eastern Conference which brings us to the uh top six teams uh in terms of point perent percentage right now it is the well the

Islanders are in a top six spot but again they have a negative goal differential the Carolina Hurricanes right there with them Islanders are 597 compared to 595 for the hurricanes hurricanes coming on finally seem to have found a goalie in Peter kov um then you have the Philadelphia

Flyers who are 597 point percentage with a plus 10 gold differential the Toronto Maple Leafs are at 603 with a plus six goal differential they’ve got some major goal tending issues having lost Joseph wall to injury ilas samsonov was waved and is assigned to the miners they are

Going with Martin Jones right now and someone named hild deby I don’t even remember his first name and then you have probably the cre the crop here in the East with the Florida Panthers 639 point percentage plus 14 gold differential they’re firmly in third the Bruins in second a 714 gold differential

22 seven and six record 50 points with a plus 23 goal differential and the New York Rangers 729 point percentage 51 points plus 26 goal differential they lead in all of these categories when it comes to the Atlantic division the Bruins are four points up on Florida with the game in hand and

Again that’s gonna be a key race down the stretch you probably want first in the Atlantic because if you finish second you’re either playing the Panthers or the maple Le likely the Leafs or perhaps even the lightning lightning are um tied with Toronto in points but Toronto

Has four games in hand so lightning probably looking at a wild card spot here at this point again we’re not even halfway through this season so it’s really early to be talking about um you know playoff positioning and things like that but again it’s never too early

Right now if the season ended right now the Bruins would be first in the Atlantic taking on the first wild card team which would be the New York Islanders and we know the Bruins have struggled against that team in the past but the big picture right now Boston

Second in the East with a record of 227 and six second overall really in terms of points and point percentage ahead of uh Winnipeg Dallas La Vancouver Colorado Vegas all these teams are kind of rounding out the top 10 Boston New York uh currently tops in

The east as well as the NHL which is a massive surprise especially considering the Bruins lost who they lost in the off season nobody had them this high at this point in the season and uh we’ll see if they can keep it going here to begin
