Brian Burke was on a recent episode of the Spittin’ Chiclets Podcast, where he noted how the Toronto Maple Leafs absolutely need to trade forward William Nylander for a defenceman.

Let’s go over his comments and the idea itself.

  1. No trade Marner , when you have no cap you don’t move your value contracts ., I love Burkie and I get where he is coming from .. but he is wrong

  2. ..Nylander is the least of the Leafs problem…Burke is right..33 million to 3 guys…talented but soft…no cup for you….

  3. Dubas promised Nylander that he won't get traded if signed with the Leafs, and that's one of the reasons Nylander signed with the Leafs at the time. A promise is a promise. Besides, Nylander is better value now than any of the 10-million guys on the Leafs.

  4. "Rather have" is fine and all, but I feel this almost ignores the makeup of the team thinking of it this way. I'd rather have an all star lineup, but it doesn't mean I can afford it. Instead of asking if one would rather have a Nylander over a defender, perhaps we should be asking if one would rather have a Nylander over a Matthews or a Tavares. Toronto needs defense and I don't know if their off season moves will be enough to change that fact. You can have all the offense in the world, but without defense you can only go so far.

So it's really more about what will win Toronto a Stanley Cup. If keeping Nylander hampers that, isn't that worth it at that point no matter how much one prefers having a Nylander in their lineup?

  5. I can't stand your voice, if you took classes to sound more like Jean Luc Picard I might think about subscribing.

  6. Brain burke one name should tell you enough Phill Kessel. Now Burkey in general is a great gm what he did with the sedin twins is legendary. But his time In Toronto wasn't good. Enough said lol

  7. Players I would accept a trade for.

    EKBLAD 7.5m 5yr
    PARAYKO 5.5m

    JONES 5.4m

    WERENSKI 5m

    PESCE 4m

Or sign HAMILTON 2021 ufa $6.5m est then you can trade N for assets.

realistically leafs WILL trade holl 2m, kerfoot 3.5m
and let anderson walk $5m in the offseason. Cap space will be $10.5m.

  8. Sens can't really be in on him because giving a 1st or top prospect makes no sense for them, but he'd be a wonderful RW opposite Brady Tkachuk. They fill in so well for where the other falls short. Brady brings the heavy game and netfront presence that Nylander lacks, and Nylander has the flash and puck skills that aren't as evident in Brady's game. Add in one of the up and coming skilled two way Cs Like White or Norris, and I think you have a heck of a line, that covers your bases really well.

I Don't think I'd be comfortable giving up more than something like Tierney, Thomson, Abramov and a pair or 2nd, which I don't think even gets you in the conversation for Nylander.

  9. bottom line: nobody wants ANY of those players for those contracts……nobody, not without substantial sweeteners.

  10. I agree. I have said for years Nylander is not the guy to trade. I think you trade Tavares. Matthews should wear the C and Tavares is getting older.

  11. Tavares doesn't matter what team he was going to he was getting 11 mill, out of top 4 forwards Nylander weakest link with Robertson coming up soon. They'll move Nylander at some point so they can lock up Freddy long term, then they'll have to worry about Reilly next…

  12. I would trade Marner for a top Dman. It’s crazy this team is spending half their cap on four forwards?!

  13. Leafs fans how would you like Matt Dumba and a first or second for Nylander. We need right shot forwards BAD! Along with everything else..We have defensive prospects already in line to replace Dumba. He still can rebound back. Has 50+ point upside. If it wasn't for his injury in a fight against Matt Tkachuk he would've likely had another productive year.

  14. Burke is right, of Nylander, Marner and Matthews, Nylander is the least productive player as good as he is. When Nylander has to play centre, in other words drive a line, he's done nothing. Marner's contract is the worst, but Nylander plus Kerfoot equals 10M. Kerfoot is light a peripheral and will be battling for a sport on the 3rd line. He's expendable for middle round picks just to dump is 3.5M. Burke is right, the Leafs need D. I'd rather move Kerfoot and Nylander to get that D rather than either of Marner or Matthews. Tavares is on a NMC.

  15. Freddy Andersen is not a money goalie and come playoffs freddy can't stop a beach ball, Leafs need a real money goalie like Darcy KUEMPER who excels come playoff time,

  16. Burke is wrong as usual, leafs can keep Nylander and still get that right D man, Trade kerfoot and holl, That is pretty much the same money as a Nylander, Do not listen to Burke,

  17. Can't stay afloat when you are that top heavy. Stay in the shallows. Don' go in the deep water. Not Nylanders fault. Team is really thin. No knee jerk reaction trades. Not really sure some of their moves made them better.

  18. I mean if they don't make the playoffs and win a round then Dubas is gone, then someone else will come in. Who knows what will happen next.
