He's been their best player in the playoffs for three years running, but the new deal really makes it hard for the Leafs to undo their mistakes like Reaves and Klingberg.

So no 2nd round pick for the next 3 drafts, no 1st round pick in 2025, only one Easton Cowan with somewhat of a projectable high-ish NHL level potential in the prospect pool and a freakin 54M$ spent on only 5 guys with at least half the defense to rebuild between this summer and the next…

This is a team that made it out of the 1st round once in the last 20 years and they are going to spend more money on 4 players than they will the rest of the team combined which is 16-19 players…
Great deal, but Marner doesn't deserve a raise/that kind of money. Nylander is your best player in the playoffs, he deserves it.
We don't cheer for cap comfort, we cheer for opponent discomfort. Paying Willy his money is an investment in league fear of the Leafs.

Jack Eichel ALSO IS A 2 WAY CENTER. Nylander is a 1 WAY WINGER. Mackinnon is a 2 WAY CENTER. Which guys have a cup and which guys dont.

Leafs are going to stay 2nd round at best. No depth, no defense, no goalie. Why? Because half the money is only going to 1 line. Leafs are playing hope game from lines 2-4 hoping that other teams won’t score on them during those shifts.

Now that he's got his pay, performance will drop off. Happens all the time that players overperform in contract years. I'd much rather have Pastrnak w/ his contract than Nylander with his.
I think he is well deserved for it. He worked for it. He is a very unique player and I'm glad that he is still a Leaf. Let's just hope he continues with what he is doing. We shall see.

The Leafs know that a hockey team is more than 4 players, right? Like, all four are absolutely elite, but damn, that is a LOT of the team’s money.
The market value for a dude averageing 90+ points in the NHL is in the range Nylander signed. Leafs either sign the guy for his worth or let him walk for nothing. The no move clause I've read is the bigger issue because if he decides he doesnt wanna be elite anymore his deal is not moveable.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again: the Leafs need a real shutdown line. I think they should downsize from a core-4 to a core-3 and sacrifice John Tavares. Not that he's not any good, but he is the oldest and there is a cap. They can then use the money to get a real shutdown center.

There is a lot of money coming off the books next year though. Murray, Klingberg, Muzzin, Samsonov, i could be wrong but i believe thats around 17 or 18M?
Nylander been a Leaf for a while Steve. You are many years too late to announce this.
Always remember, the argument to trade Nylander was never about him not being good. Quite the opposite; it's about him being SO good and SO valuable on that OLD contract, that he fetched the most in return on a deal.
He's market value now. So that window has closed. But good for the Leafs for keeping a good player. And good luck with the rest. No relaxation for the "cap circumvention team"–I mean "cap specialists".

Except you were wrong during the offseason too. PLD had signed for 8.5 and Timo had 8,8 and even before this season Nylander was already way better than those 2.
There was no world Nylander wasnt getting at least 10,5 as a free agent at end of this season. Leafs balked at that and now they had to pay even more coz hes showing hes even better than we thought.
Leafs fan here. I love Nylander and am happy he is staying 8 years. With that said, 11.5 is wayyyyy too much $$$$$. $10.25 is more my thinking MAX. After Tavares' contract ends I hope they resign him but the offer should be 5.5 MAX for 2 seasons and if he refuses , let him walk. DO NOT BEND. The Leafs must claw back some of that cash. Marner should resign at NO MORE than 11.5. 35 year old Nylander will make 11.5. SIGH. happy he is here but Brad should have dug in a bit more than he did.
