I think Noah Juulsen has raised a legitimate question for the team:

Does he make Myers expendable without needing to replace him with another D? Can you trot out Juulsen as your 3rd pairing D-man and have Friedman be the 7th D?

Juulsen is better than Myers on the PK, but significantly worse offensively. But he’s also more physical and isn’t putting himself out of position to do so anymore.

If you can move out Myers’ contract by the deadline and foray that money into a top 6 C (if this is even possible, no idea who we could get), would that be enough to propel this team into the top tier of contenders, or do you need to improve on Juulsen?

    Hughes-Hronek

    Zadorov-Cole

    Soucy-Juulsen

Personally, my only worry is if Juulsen regresses this blows up in everyone’s face. If the way he’s played for the most of the season is who he is, then I have no concerns really outside of 7/8/9 d-men. That being said, teams that take calculated risks and succeed, win chips.

While I do think we have this tendency to over value bottom 6/grinder type players, it seems Juulsen has played himself into the conversation for taking over or at least getting a long look for a RD spot full time next season.

Juulsen hasn’t even played 100 NHL games in his career yet, that number would be a whole lot higher if it wasn’t for injuries. He basically lost 3 years of development.

I’ve been more glass half full about Juulsen since they acquired him, in terms of I think he can carve out a career as an NHL regular.

He’s one of those guys who had a bit of draft pedigree, ran into some injuries along his development.. and then similar to Joshua was breaking into the league around covid time.

Not saying Juulsen is a future top-4 guy, but I always felt he had solid upside as a depth piece.

This is a perfect example of a guy taking the opportunity presented to him to re-vitalize his career.

At this point I’m interested to see how much better Cole or Soucy can play on their off side vs Juulsen. Early season and pre-season attempts to shift them over combined with Juulsens progress kind of suggests you may have to squint to notice the upgrade. I don’t think it’s going to be nearly the night and day difference we saw replacing off-side Friedman with Zadorov.

Either way, we’re headed to the playoffs and we know we’ll need more than 6 dmen so Juulsens progress will still be very important.

The walking on thin ice feeling watching his shifts early on are gone. Even if he might not be pocketing points, his shifts are calm and quick. He just needed to calibrate in a bit 👍

Myers has also made himself less noticeable, and the arms of my chairs thank him. The best thing for him is to just play third pair minutes, and move Zadorov up for extra shifts here and there, but manage Myers’ workload as best you can.

I think that he makes myers expandable for next year.

Agreed, he was a huge liability but he has really cleaned up his game. Improved big time.

He’s now a decent number 6 instead of being unplayable.

I have always felt that this guy is far more skilled then we are seeing, as he learns his skill level will get better

i wish some of our other guys threw around the body like he does, such a great part of his game

I know I got blocked last year from a few people for saying this so get your mouses ready but…. Stillman played 8 games less than Juul and has less goals against on the PK, while averaging about 15 seconds less per game. NEvber heard a word about Stillman’s pk prowess, especially since he was often paired with Myers.

    Block away.

I don’t get why canucks are looking at more D. We have 1 too many at the moment. I get depth for the playoffs, but still.
