Im just annoyed cause all summer I took shit for saying that there was no guarantee that Treliving would get players on a discount. I am laughing at all the self-proclaimed Dubas-haters who would point to negotiations and say shit like “Nylander is why we got Treliving”. It’s akin to the “Dubas will never fire Keefe” –> Treliving signs Keefe to extension.
I love Nylander and I think its the right deal to keep him (and Marner too fwiw) – but there isn’t a single discount. Not on term, not on NMC, not on bonus structure.

If Matthews is worth 13.5 then this year’s Nylander is definitely worth 11.5
They should have had this contract done in the offseason when it would have been a bit cheaper. No problem with the deal other than that.

The whole paying our core 4 too much goes out the window in 2 seasons. Tavares will be getting paid half, the salary cap will be even higher (assuming we don’t experience another Global pandemic). We will have money for improvements on d. Woll will be better by then too.
I honestly think we are a legit 2-3 seasons away from being very big time cup contenders.
And in the mean time, I still think we can still compete. Maybe even get lucky and go far.

My biggest issue is that the Leafs sugar coat these deals with bonuses yet it’s not enough to get the players to take any sort of discount to better the team.

My question is, what exactly did Tre negotiate? Willy got the term, the $ amount, the NMC and favorable bonus structure. I feel any of us could have negotiated that deal.
Am I missing something?

I’m gonna be real. After I stopped playing chel (I’m not gonna spent $650 + tax + $100 each year to play it), I’ve stopped caring about the salary cap as much (time split pretty 50/50 between hut and franchise mode), atp I don’t really care how much our guys are making, just keep the important players and I’ll be watching every game anyways

Anyone signing anywhere else in the NHL wouldn’t cause this much attention.
Toronto is a crazy town that loves to criticize everything.
I am truly scared for the city when they win the cup. My fear is the city will get brunt to the ground because people don’t know how to handle anything.
The leafs are a great team. I would love to hear people talk about them in a positive nature.

I think it’s great. The players should get every dollar they can from these owners. The NHL and owners don’t give a damm about the players and promoting them. Why should the players care about them?

I’m somewhere in the middle. Love that we have Willy locked for 8 years but man it’s going to be hard to get some solid depth.. especially next year. Almost nothing left over for the rest of the team once you go through the salary of the core 4 + Rielly.

I’m not going to blame anybody. It’s great that he’s going to be here for a long time. It’s also a huge amount of cap space.
