Welcome back, Ilya. I’m not sure you’re ready, but I’ll cheer you on all the same.

  2. Hoardzunit

I think this is more of needing Hildeby to play some games and making sure he doesn’t stay rusty than needing Sammy back.

  3. JamesCurtis24

….. What in the world could possibly have changed in this short amount of time? I hope he doesn’t come in, lay 5 goals and absolutely destroy the vibe the team has built while he’s been away.

This is literally the Manoah situation again. How tf can this happen in the city twice in a calendar year?

  4. JRocleafs

I really donā€™t understand this one, unless they have zero intention of playing any backup and wanted Hildeby back playing games.

I wish nothing but the best for Sammy, but itā€™s an odd time to bring back a player who changed the entire dynamic of the team.

  5. I’m guessing this is just so Hildeby can get back to playing.

  6. Theteacupman

Honestly I’m suprised they didn’t put him in a Marlies game to evaluate him before bringing back him up.

  7. 3X-Leveraged

The team is rolling and you want to bring this guy back into the room? Holy fuck

  8. Soggy_Specific4093

Donā€™t want to alarm anyone and heā€™s not the most reliable source but JD Bunkis said on Leafs Talk last night that he heard rumblings that Sammy might get the Red Wings start on Sunday šŸ™‚

  9. Fuuutuuuree

I really hope fans at the game cheer for him the first time he back out there. Dude really needs support right now

  10. I understand this move, itā€™s clear Jones has the net and is feeling good. I think they are sending the beast down to get some games in the ahl for the next week. Theyā€™ll ride jones until their road trip and then bring the beast back up and let him get his first start against Arizona on the first night of the back to back.

That is what Iā€™m hoping for anyways

  11. ElephantShell34

Management saw we were stringing together a few wins here finally and thought ā€œthatā€™s enough of thatā€.

  12. Investment_Sharp

So we are starting Sammy on Sunday? I donā€™t like this. I really thought Hildeby would get a start and Sunday seemed like a good time

  13. HemiKooks

What was the point then? I know they painted it as a mental rehabilitation but wouldnā€™t it be worth a rep or two with the Marlies?

Soā€¦say he gets one of the back-to-backs this weekend and gets DUNKED on, ***again***. What then?

  14. BeerLeagueSnipes

So what the absolute fuck of a point was all of this?

  15. Successful-Amoeba487

Wish they had played hildeby last night when there was a 5 goal lead. San Jose wasn’t playing to win and getting Hildeby in net would have been good for him.

  16. Infinite_Physics220

I think they want Hildeby getting reps in with the Marlies and don’t want him sitting around doing nothing. They know Woll is coming back soon so Sammy might only get 1 more start before then.

  17. YarnhamSunrise

    People need to relax.

It’s clear the net is Jones. Hildeby needs to play games and hopefully the break has given Samsonov sometime to get his head straight.

People actively rooting for his failure are being super weird.

  18. Reggae4Triceratops

I can understand giving Hildeby some play time… But why not bring up Pettruzzelli if he’s likely just going to ride pine? Samsonov has been away for like 5 minutes.

  19. bigcaulkcharisma

Itā€™s wild he never played a single game with the Marlies. What was even the point of sending him down?

  20. JamesCurtis24

The only thing I can think is with Woll being a few weeks away, the Leafs need to figure out what they do, or do not have in Samsonov.

If I’m not mistaken, Jones now needs to clear waivers again, and his play has made that highly unlikely he’ll clear.

  21. itaintbirds

This is a terrible decision. What is management thinking, I feel for Sammy but he has been one of the worst goalies in the league this year.

  22. Marlies probably need Hildeby more than Leafs need him sitting on the bench. But, with how sensitive Ilya seems, is it going to be the best for his mental state sitting on the Leafs bench watching Jones steal his job?

Either way, this seems weird. I personally think it’d be best for Sammy if he was traded (or even waived) and got to start fresh in a new city without the “Toronto media” pressuring him. He’s a good goalie but the pressure may have broken him.

  23. burningxmaslogs

Sammy getting traded or is he an E3? i.e Emergency 3rd goaltender?

  24. IAmTheBredman

The leafs clearly have to give Sammy another shot after his break, but this makes a very interesting dynamic when woll is back. They obviously won’t be rushing him, so he’s 2-3 weeks out still, but if Sammy comes in this weekend and has a solid game to build off of, what do you do? Do you let Sammy run with it a bit as the highest paid guy and then try to shop him while the iron is hot? Maybe you don’t even have to attach a sweetener and can just move him out for a low pick, and clear cap space for another move. It’s hard to say cause goalies are so unpredictable. No one would have thought jones would be this solid for us, and he almost never got a shot at this level. But now it’s looking like he could be the vet 1B next year to mentor Woll.

  25. WintersbaneGDX

I feel like I’ve said this a dozen times.

    Leafs

    1) Jones

    2) Petruzzelli

    Marlies

    1a) Hildeby

    1b) Samsanov

    Then when Woll returns:

    Leafs

    1a) Woll

    1b) Jones

    3) Samsanov

    Marlies

    1a) Hildeby

    1b) Petruzzelli

This isn’t as hard as we’re making it.

  26. Jmac24mats13

I personally donā€™t like this, I feel like they should keep Sammy out of the room entirely. No distractions for the team and keep it how it is, because itā€™s working

  27. 50missioncap

I guess his leash is 1 game. If he shits the bed one more time, he’ll have to report to the Marlies.

  28. Menessy27

The move makes sense. Jones is playing well enough that you canā€™t just waive him like you would have a month ago. Woll will still be out a few weeks and now is the time to evaluate what your goaltending situation will be going forward. Samsonov has been terrible but we know that his struggles are largely mental. Talent wise heā€™s probably still your best goalie. We also know Jones has been horrible in recent years and will probably regress hard if you play him enough. You donā€™t want to bank on him when it matters, and as solid as Woll has been good a rookie goalie in the playoffs is more iffy than a good version of Samsonov

If Samsonov bounces back then thatā€™s really good for your team and you probably move Jones for value (unless they want to keep 3 goalies?)

If samsonov sucks again even after this mental reset then you at least fully know that heā€™s cooked. Heā€™s already been through waivers so you can just send him down and run Woll/Jones and keep him stashed in case he happens to bounce back and go on a good run in the AHL
