    1. He’s your 3rd best/most important defensemen. It’s not prudent to pay 7.5+ long term to a 2nd pairing defensemen when help is needed elsewhere

    2. He’s the top d man on the trade board in his prime and would get you a HAUL

    3. He waffles on wanting to be in or out so much that it seems like he only wants to stay because calgary is offering a boatload of cash. Could see a very plausible scenario where a year or 2 down the road He’s unhappy again and demands a trade.

Signing Hanifin is fine, if the team is winning and has potential to win in the playoffs. However the team is very mid, major chemistry issues up front and a lack of high end forward talent, trading hanifin and lindholm make a lot more sense. Signing both just ensures we are mid in the future, getting a haul for each at least there’s a chance we see improvement.

His trade value is high. It’s tempting to see what’s out there

He’s 26, we haven’t seen the best of Hanifin. He’s gonna get traded and become a really good top pairing guy, then all you same “TRADE HIM” people are gonna come back and say get mad and ask why he was traded

If you trade away Hanifin, Lindhom and Tanev you’re hoping to get a player like Hanifin or a prospect or pick that develops into a player like him.

It just makes sense to keep him if the price is right.

When your team is mid, definitely lockdown your most mid dman.

Part of the signing guys is having them want to sign. Hanifin turned down 60 million, does he even wanna come back?

What does re-signing him actually do to help the Flames? Is he good enough that the team is a contender with him and a non-contender without him? I don’t think so. Is his value in sheltering and mentoring younger dmen as the enter and grown in the league? We have Weegs and Ras for that.

Yes, he eats minutes, is mobile, and has offensive upside. But honestly, keeping him is not going to significantly elevate this team in the near or even long-term future. The assets we get in a trade for him may also fail to do that, but they could also succeed in doing so.

Top-four, right-shot blueliners are premium assets for true playoff teams looking to take the next step. That is not what the Flames are, and they would be wise to maximize this asset after gambling with previous valuable assets and walking away empty-handed. To re-sign him is to double down on our middle-of-the-road approach, an approach with which I am wholeheartedly exhausted.

Trading away Hanifin for prospects and draft picks is so dumb. You’re essentially HOPING that you end up with someone as good as Hanifin in a few years with futures that you get in return. Guess what, we already have that guy and he is only 26. D-men are productive into their 30s. If he wants to stay and if we can sign him for a reasonable sum (which 7.5-8m x 8y is), this is a no brainer. Locking down Raz, Weegs and Hanifin for the next 3 years would provide so much stability on the back end.

  10. You could argue he’s the best of the FA to keep, he’s just not 7.5×8 player. At 6.5 I’d say you’re better off keeping him than trading him and hoping the player you draft is as good.

The thing is we just don’t project to be good in his most likely best years.

If you believe you can retool or compete by the middle of his deal, you sign him. If you plan to rebuild, you probably trade him for the best picks and prospects you can get.

  11. Can this fucking team cash in on a pending UFA at least once in my lifetime.
