Is the NHL’s offside review system broken?

After Connor McDavid voiced his displeasure post-game Tuesday night about Zach Hyman’s third period goal being disallowed after a lengthy review determined Leon Draisaitl was offside, TSN Hockey analyst Martin Biron gives his thoughts on if the NHL’s offside review system is broken.

  1. Biron is an absolute moron. It was a horrible call and there wasn't definitive evidence to overturn the call on the ice.

  2. It’s idiotic. Nothing is perfect. They should go back to the old way. If the refs miss calling it at the time too bad. They miss all kinds of other stuff like tripping and holding and slashing. If there was no goal on that play then it never gets reviewed, even though the play should have stopped for offside, and everything is different in the game from then on anyway. Butterfly effect.

  3. You got to take into account the quality of the video, but at 2:10 the closest you can see if it's offside or not, and it doesn't look definitively offside to me. Biron contradicts himself, and McDavid's right. If you need an electron microscope to count how many electrons between the skate blade and the blueline than it's not definitively offside to the naked eye.

  4. I disagree with Biron here. Did Draisaitl not have possession of the puck?
So, what is possession and isn't possession? I feel like the Oilers are always the test case for these issues, but they never become the standard.

  5. The biggest probably with it is that it can never go the other way.

If the Referee DOES call it offside, you can't review it and get the puck back. Do the offiside thing only ever takes away a goal.

Other things like if something was called no goal on the ice, you can review it and be awarded a goal so at least it goes both ways.

The Offside is also the only 'retroactive' review, it could be 10, 20 seconds or 2 minutes in the past. Something else like kicking motion or goalie interference is right in the moment, it's not rewinding time.

  6. Mcdavid is not a very good Spokesperson for the Game IMHO….he chooses self-serving things to voice his powerful opinion over….he dies on all the wrong hills…hes to busy "proudly"wrapping his stick in colored tape and poking fun at the NHL to get his Team to the next level. The NHL is always evolving their game…Mcdavids whining is a big part of the "Not Mature Yet" storyline behind last years Playoff losses…Leon has matured but Connors a loose cannon with poor aim.

  7. Bigger story is that mcdavid is becoming more of a whiney bitch then Crosby ever was. Crosby took non stop abuse and was still ridiculed by the media. Mcdavid wants every rule tilted his way and whines when everything isn’t served on his silver platter

  8. If the NHL wants more offense just eliminate the offsides rule. After all there is no offsides in the NBA and there games regularly has teams scoring well above 100 points per game.

  9. McDavid has a point though – there are situations when is should not matter.
One of such situations is might be when they can't decide in 6 minutes…. But there is also another situation, that happens more often:
    – The zone entry might be offside (not enough for the linesman to spot it right away and blow the whistle, but still an objective offside).
    – But it does not result in an immediate goal, but the attacking team will make several passes, the play will last several seconds, even tens of seconds, before finally a shot and goal is scored…
I believe in this scenario it is stupid to revert the whole game several tens of seconds back; the defending team had enough time to regroup, they held off the attack for long enough that the initial offside is no longer relevant.
If the offside was obvious, the linesmen would have already stopped the game… so if the offside was not obvious, and the game lasted long enough (defined by number of seconds and/or passes in the offensive zone), then let it be.

  10. Should be 2 mins max for an offside review. If you can't figure it out in that time the call on ice should stand.

If play continued and every player on the ice treated the entry like it was onside it really didn't effect the play.

  11. I dont think you should be able to review anything that isnt at fullspeed. Zero zooming, zero slow down bullshit, same speed as the ref. If you cant see it move on.

  12. Marc Methot former London knights player early 2000 overdrive 👌 John earskin 99 lol 96- Rico Fata 96 he was awesome get him on overdrive hasey b 👈👈

  13. So..after all that talking. I still didn't see any proof that is was on/ offside. So can you back it up with where you see it being offside since it was overturned TSN?

  14. If it's not obvious to you what obvious is, then you are not conscious enough and you need to wake up. Things meant to be judged with human awareness cannot be improved upon by making more clearly defined rules. It is the human that interprets and applies the rules. This is what needs improving. Clarify the mind.

  15. I've never liked his opinions lol. It is broken. Theres no legit rules it's a guess each time.

  16. I disagree with Biron 100% here. If you look at the skate, it's a hairline over, but the puck is on Leon's stick and under control. I think that's the part they were trying to determine and no way was it determinative. They got the call absolutely wrong. The system is designed in such a way that they are biased towards finding offsides because of the penalty applied if it is incorrect. This has become if it's close it's offside. Nothing should take this long. The game pretty much died after this break, and I'm betting they lost a huge tv audience.

  17. If FIFA can have an automatic goal line reader and the tennis world has the Hawk-Eye system, then what's stopping the NHL from putting blueline and goal line readers underneath the ice?

  18. both these calls missed the point. NOT in the blue paint, 29 had control….please stop talking

  19. Who the f is this guy anyways 😂😂 just saying words has no idea whats he talking about … Chirps mcdavid about his 15 min comment … Ends video with " the review system could be a little faster " ..

  20. I'd like to see the technology improve to get this more accurate and immediate. The tech exists, it's just a matter of implementing it correctly.
