“Gabe Landeskog has returned to skating for the first time since knee surgery.

The Colorado Avalanche captain joined teammates Thursday for an optional practice with light individual drill work. Landeskog — ruled out for the 2023-24 regular season — has surpassed eight months of recovery from a right knee cartilage replacement procedure.

“There’s really nothing new. This has been part of the plan for quite some time to the next step in his process, to start getting on the ice,” coach Jared Bednar said. “I’m assuming, and I don’t know for certain, that it’s not going to be an everyday on the ice kind of thing. He’ll mix that into his rehab work and his gym work, until eventually, he’s hitting the ice every day.”

Landeskog has not played since Game 6 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Finals. His injury stems from the 2020 NHL playoffs when a skate blade from teammate Cale Makar sliced Landeskog’s leg just below his right knee against the Dallas Stars. Landeskog has undergone three different surgeries to address the problem.”
