Hellebuyck was overlooked as a young goalie prospect, was drafted in the 5th round by Winnipeg out of the NAHL, became one of the best college hockey goalies ever at UMass Lowell, and has turned into arguably the best goalie in the NHL right now! He has an inspiring story and his next level mindset is what helped him become one of the best goalies in hockey.

I remember summer of 2017, my family always slandered Helly and thought Mason and Hutchinson were gonna be the goalies (Mason full-time) goalies for 2017-19. I was literally the only one in my fam who had faith in him, and I was right.
Helly didn't look amazing at first on the Jets but you could always see the dedication

Would Hellebuyck's playstyle be considered Hybrid?
It's always funny watching Hellebuycks highlights, because there's rarely anything flashy about it…often boring. Even his stick paddle save looks basic because Connors never out or too far out of position. He makes every save in a extremely calm manor, and never looks stressed, or phased. As a Jets fan, it's a massive blessing to have such a incredible goalie, and it feels even better this year now that the team in front of him is playing much better defense, so Connor isn't having to make 35-40 saves a night on a consistent basis anymore.
Not gunna lie, I didn't expect much from him until the 2018 season. The guy surprised me.
The Jets are so good this year. I'm a Winnipeger and haven't been this excited for the play offs since 2018. Lets keep it going boys! GO JETS GO
One thing about Hellebuyck, which based on the quotes in this video has been true more or less his whole life, is his confidence. Even when he has a bad game, i don't think I've ever seen a game where he believes he's having a bad game in the middle of it. His body language never says "i guess tonight just isn't my night", it's always "well they got that one by me but they won't get the next one"

Hellebuyck was scouted specifically by long time Manitoba Moose goalie coach / Winnipeg Jets goalie scout Rick St. Croix. He went to scout a different goalie, noticed Hellebuyck and convinced Jets ownership to send him back for more scouting. I had the opportunity to talk with St. Croix a few years ago in his final year with the Moose and he said he was the only guy scouting Hellebuyck and single handedly convinced management to draft him. St. Croix then went on to coach him while he played for the Moose.
